At Gym Box, stereos pump out an energizing soundtrack as clients lift, run, and sweat amidst night-club-inspired decor. Mirrors reflect the silver and black of the new equipment that fills the strength and cardio rooms, and indoor cycling classes are held in the alternating glow of red and purple lights. Boxing classes thwack and strike the heavy bags that dangle from the ceiling of the training room, and TRX classes sculpt stronger bodies from an assortment of hanging ropes and cables.
A fitness and wellness club co-founded by Pascale Rothman and Dr. Lawton W. Tang, MD, UEvolution aims to help their clients better themselves in whatever way they need. Beyond fast-paced fitness classes such as Movestrong strength training and indoor cycling, the skilled team of trainers, instructors, and coaches provide an array of services ranging from personal training and physical therapy to nutrition programs centered around healthy comfort foods. Members also frequent the on-site spa, where they can step inside airbrush tanning booths, enjoy massages and personalized steam rooms, or stop by the oxygen bar to recharge post-workout while pretending to sip pantomime cocktails.
Pilates Plus By Eden Sassoon's instructors lead group classes that augment the fundamental principles of Pilates with dynamic muscle workouts. The studio utilizes the SPX system, which adheres to Joseph Pilates' postural alignment and flexibility exercises as a foundation for improving muscular stamina, increasing cardio respiratory endurance, and accelerating metabolism. While helping students strengthen and tone bodies, specialized instructors infuse lessons with areas of their own expertise. For example, instructor Kiki enhances her lessons by teaching techniques acquired after 15 years of ballet experience and years becoming a black belt in tae kwon do. Brian enlivens his signature classes with a background that includes martial arts, breakdancing, and being raised by a pack of killer whales. Private lessons are also available for one-on-one instruction.
Most of the class sessions at the YOGA place employ some form of Vinyasa yoga style, linking breaths with movements to create seamlessly flowing sequences of asanas. Although the style incorporates more physical activity than some, it still requires intense amounts of focus as students instinctually monitor their form and alignment. The instructors mainly lead open sessions for students of virtually any skill level; however, they also host intensive advanced-level sessions, which incorporate inversions and controlled levitations, as well as relaxing restorative sessions that use props to support the deeply sustained stretches.
As a former collegiate rower, NSCA-certified personal trainer Lindsay Pollock has an affinity for functional fitness. So it's no surprise she took an interest in CrossFit, which revolves around a daily workout consisting of functional movements. Think pull-ups, box jumps, sprints, and other exercises that could come in handy when you see a mouse. Newcomers and regulars alike can participate in the scalable workouts, moving at their own pace as they build strength and endurance. Pollock and her team of fellow CrossFit Level 1?certified coaches unveil the workouts each morning at CrossFit 213. They augment the headliner classes with yoga sessions and no-workouts-barred open gyms.
The last words you might think you'd hear from a baker are "easy sugar." At Sweet Dreamery Desserts, however, owner Andrea insists on putting the cake at center stage, not the frosting. Inspired by her mother, who baked authentic goodies for the family's Belizean restaurant, Andrea set out on her own baking journey at the tender age of 8, putting her two Easy-Bake ovens to work. Today, the ovens are bigger and the recipes are more refined, but there's a bit of that early passion in everything she does. Andrea and her staff bake cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops to order, creating them all from scratch in small batches to preserve the home-baked taste and the friendships struck between like-minded chocolate chips. They use no preservatives or artificial additives in the batter, just wholesome, natural ingredients such as real vanilla extract and salt-free butter.
