  • The Gorbals
"Best restaurant in the Universe" — Ilan Hall Chef-owner Ilan Hall named The Gorbals after a diverse immigrant neighborhood of Glasgow, Scotland, where his father grew up rubbing elbows with neighbors from Pakistan, Russia, India, and Eastern Europe. Like Hall's Israeli Scottish Russian German heritage and The Gorbals' mishmash of cultures, the restaurant can't be pigeonholed into a specific background. Instead, it celebrates a joyful cultural synthesis with a pan-ethnic menu of contemporary gourmet small plates and desserts: banh mi poutine mingles with dry-aged burgers, and latkes and applesauce share table space with welsh rabbit and grilled squid. A wine list and a spirits menu complement each dish with rich, complex European vinos, smoky scotches and woodsy bourbons, or perfectly balanced classic cocktails. The menu's shareable spirit makes The Gorbals especially suitable for group dining occasions. Before opening up The Gorbals, Hall cut his culinary teeth as a teenager in the Lorenzo de Medici school’s Apicius program in Florence. He proceeded to hone his chef's knife at esteemed locales such as Charlie Palmer's Aureole New York and Mario Batali's Casa Mono. Most visitors may recognize Hall from his appearance on Bravo TV's Top Chef, where he claimed victory in the second season after defeating all other chefs in unarmed combat. Hall also hosts the Esquire Network's Knife Fight, a series of underground cooking competitions whose first two seasons were filmed inside The Gorbals.

  • Pestolini
The name Pestolini conjures up visions of pasta coated in the bright green Genoa sauce, but though pesto and pasta both have spots on Pestolini's menu, the eatery is not an Italian joint. It actually offers an eclectic mix of food, including breakfast burritos, pancakes, and grilled sandwiches. The food pairs with a wide variety of drinks, such as organic french-press teas, espresso, boba tea drinks, and smoothies.

  • Better Booch
When Trey Lockerbie's sister had cancer, she would regularly consume kombucha, which has alkalizing benefits. As a result, Trey became fascinated by the beverage, but found he didn't love the flavors he found in stores. So he decided to brew it himself along with his wife, Ashleigh. The timing couldn't have been better. The couple previously spent their days as musicians touring with popular international artists and found that after years of dealing with exhausting schedules, they needed to make a change. They focused on their kombucha operation and began selling their Better Booch beverages at farmers markets in LA a few short years later. Now, Better Booch's small-batch-fermented kombucha is beloved by the press. Coast magazine deemed Better Booch the "king of taste," and Daily Candy said it tasted like "little sips of heaven." Leonardo DiCaprio has even been snapped by PopSugar buying Better Booch at a Beverly Hills farmers market. The beverages, which feature such flavors as Ginger Boost and Golden Pear, are made using organic teas hand-blended by Art of Tea. Unlike other kombuchas, Better Booch contains no added sugar and is unpasteurized, ensuring customers get the health benefits of live enzymes.

  • The Vegan Joint Downtown LA
At first glance, the menu here looks like one found at any American diner: pepper steak dinners, burgers, BLTs, and breakfast served all day. But this isn't a regular diner. This is The Vegan Joint, a diner where dishes are instead built from soy, seitan, and organic tofu. The all-day breakfast is quite popular (reason enough to go there, according to LA Weekly), but it's only a small part of the menu. In addition to tofu scrambles and tropical pancakes, there are wraps, nachos, burgers, and Thai-style dishes such as curries and pad thai.
