The Art of You Holistic Center heals bodies with relaxing treatments performed both indoors and out. Classic facials and back treatments evict dirt from the skin, and massages—which range from deep tissue to Swedish—turn tense muscles into butter. The center also offers acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine and only uses natural products that are free of parabens, sulfates, and poltergeists.
Tao of Venus Wellness Center owner Beth Meneley draws on her master's degree in oriental medicine and a passion for healing to protect and mend patients' physiques through a diverse range of holistic therapies. Trained acupuncturists and chiropractors work to realign the body through time-honored methods, and seasoned massage therapists ease pain with a tailored blend of six tension-melting modalities. Thermography specialists boast the ability to detect cancer without the use of radiation through thermal imaging, which aims to find harmful cells through the naturally occurring heat of their weekly bake-offs. Before and after appointments, patients sip steaming cups of tea in an intimate relaxation room dotted with leafy plants, Eastern totems, and modern furnishings.
Certified personal trainer Lance Callahan has been whipping clients into shape for over a decade. From his base in Silver Lake, he serves a wide variety of clients, from athletes to working moms, from weekend warriors to celebrities. Since 2007, he has trained most of his clients at Body Builders Gym on Hyperion Avenue, but he also has his own fully-equipped private studio nearby, where he works with select clients who prefer a private setting away from the gym. Callahan got into the personal training business over a decade ago, when he was asked to conduct a session at a corporate “big chain” gym while still a student at UCLA. Today, Callahan is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine.
Energetic music and excited dancers fill Heartbeat House in Atwater Village throughout the day. The entire wall facing the sidewalk is made up of windows partially covered by sheer curtains – still, with the thumping of feet and inescapable rhythms, you can’t help but look inside to find a well-appointed studio space, open and airy. Depending on the day and time, you might catch an eyeful Zumba, kids’ hip hop dance or the genre-mixing Yoga Booty Ballet. All levels of experience are welcome, and instructors do their best to include everyone and to provide a fun expressive dance class. These non-competitive classes keep a vibrant, upbeat atmosphere, drawing in the progressively hip neighborhood who would like to tone and sculpt without dragging themselves to the gym. Monthly class passes are available, as are cheaper weekly classes, like a seven dollar community yoga that ensures there’s room for everyone.
