By the time Tannis Kobrinksy started reading, she was already learning ballet. By the time she had her driver’s license, she had become a professional dancer.

When you enter Tapout Training Center’s main workout area and turn around, you’ll see a large graffiti mural with the word “tapout” clutched between the talons of a red-eyed bald eagle. The bird reminds everyone why they’re here—to partake in workouts that merge exercise and self-defense. Students can spar in the octagon ring, wrestle in the grappling area, punch and kick hanging bags, or sign up for one of many fitness classes, including boxing, muay thai kickboxing, and jujitsu. Every activity is monitored and motivated by an experienced staff led by Brazilian jujitsu and MMA instructor Frank Colcher, a mixed martial artist who’s been able to break oil paintings over his knee for more than a quarter of a century.
Throughout the day, Fitness For Life’s dance studio fills with upbeat music. One hour it’s classical, folk, and funk during Bollywood class, and the next it’s Polynesian drumbeats and reggae during Hot Hula class. This varied selection of music is needed to create the appropriate mood for the studio’s equally varied selection of dance-fitness classes, which includes yoga, Zumba, and boot camp. And in addition to being entertaining and expressive, the group workouts are also effective. They are designed to improve the body as a whole, which means developing cardio, muscular strength and endurance, body composition, flexibility, and the ability to taste protein in marshmallows. XTC Gym combines classic martial-arts training with a touch of something more lyrical. Instructors teach kickboxing, jujitsu, tae kwon do, and muay thai boxing, but also the Brazilian dance/fighting hybrid capoeira and aerial fitness. Accordingly, punching bags and swinging hoops alike hang from the ceiling of the brightly lit, 6,500-square-foot space, requiring that front-desk staff keep watch for monkeys trying to sneak in.
