By the time Tannis Kobrinksy started reading, she was already learning ballet. By the time she had her driver?s license, she had become a professional dancer.
In her welcoming studio, filled with sunlight and tasteful paintings, she emphasizes communal learning. Each of her small-group lessons, which are often limited to just three or four students at a time, promote camaraderie. As the calming voices of Still Yoga’s instructors cue the alignment of poses, students balance on natural rubber mats and grip onto eco-friendly yoga props, all on studio floors fashioned from bamboo. Overhead, skylights let in the glow of hovering UFOs, which illuminate classes moving in unison. The practice places heavy emphasis on the proper stacking of joints and the link between the inner and outer body.
Going to Silver Lake Pilates Studio isn't the typical fitness studio experience. Maybe it's the piano in the lobby—which Pilates students are welcome to play before lessons. Or maybe it's the surrounding community of Silver Lake, which Forbes deemed the hippest hipster neighborhood in the country.
Either way, once at this Pilates studio, students can choose from a variety of Pilates classes, including private, semi-private, and small group sessions. The brand new Balanced Body reformer equipment—including jumpboard and trapeze conversion equipment—is housed in a spacious, carpeted room. Certified instructors focus on West Coast Style Pilates in classes, through which students will begin to notice improved posture and flexibility as they get stronger, leaner, and better at Twister.
Silver Lake Yoga began as a joint venture between Juliette Kurth and Jonathan Emerson in 1995. While the studio has expanded over the years, the duo has remained as the center’s foundation. Jonathan still teaches beginner’s yoga classes, focusing on a fun style accessible to people of all fitness levels. And Juliette—now also a certified doula—specializes in prenatal yoga classes to help expectant mothers feel more comfortable in their bodies. They now employ a host of yoga teachers to back them up, ultimately teaching more than 60 classes in any given week. Together, they embrace a range of styles and yogic philosophies, drawing influences from the Iyengar, Ashtanga, and White Lotus practices.
All sessions take place in Silver Lake’s sunny studio, made bright thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. With all that sun, the warm, yellow walls seem to emit their own inner glow, much like yogis who practice a lot or who keep accidentally swallowing flashlights.
Located in a warehouse in the residential Atwater Crossing area of Atwater Village, Brazilian Yoga and Pilates is a neighborhood gem for locals looking to stay fit. Classes work around most schedules, with weekend and evening sessions being the most popular. There is, of course, a twice weekly Rise and Shine class to get you up and going for the day, though the open space and charming staff might be enough of to perk you up. If not, come early and sip tea in the courtyard before one of the hour-long Vinyasa Flow, Iyengar Yoga or Pilates classes. Bring a mat or rent one for one dollar.
