Amid the hustle and bustle of the city, Louisville Nature Center offers a tranquil escape from urban sprawl. At its 41-acre Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve, more than 2 miles of hiking trails wind past a verdant forest populated by 180 species of tree, shrub, and wildflower. The latter blooms in a native pond and garden, and dragonflies and 30 butterfly species in other gardens pay homage to Lord of the Flies by trying to collectively lift a conch. More creatures soar skyward inside one of Louisville's only bird blinds, where visitors can watch 150 species of resident and migratory birds fluttering about.
After exploring on their own, guests can relax on one the picnic tables or beneath the covered gazebo before joining in on special events such as owl hikes. Youngsters, meanwhile, can discover more nature factoids at summer camps, educational programs, or birthday parties, which include guided hikes and live animal presentations.
Prepare for a pivotal business trip abroad or avoid order mix-ups at the local carniceria that result in lugging a case of Ecto Cooler home. The experienced instructors at Los Monitos will help customers tap their inner linguist to expand their communication skills and help cross over language and cultural barriers. Ten-week courses start at different experience levels and include 1.5 hours of class time each week in Spanish, English (ESL), French, German, Italian, and Portuguese. Check the Louisville and Prospect schedules for class times. Customers will make great strides in achieving language proficiency over that period, or develop their own hybrid language that’s useful for chatting with plants at home. Classes are capped at 10 students per course, ensuring efficient learning and decreasing back-of-the-room giggling.

Multi-platinum saxophonist Boney James is not solely a smooth jazz artist. In fact, he continually shirks the label of “jazz,” despite his Soul Train Award for best jazz album and his habit of landing atop Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Charts. With three Grammy nominations in the pop and R&B field, Boney’s genre-spanning music reaches a wild variety of ears and incites categorization-related panic in record store clerks. Touring behind his latest album Contact, a collection of soulful numbers inspired by Quincy Jones and featuring the No. 1 single “Spin,” Boney impresses as one exhalation unleashes a stream of butterfly notes while a push of the pinky pops manhole covers with sultry steam. Buttressed by a handcuff-tight back-up band, Boney’s boisterous live performance takes fans on a euphonic voyage akin to riding a limo on rollercoaster tracks.
