Evelyn and Neill Andritz grew up near the banks of the Kiskiminetas River and quickly became enamored with its wildlife and natural beauty. Wanting to share this passion with others, they founded The River?s Edge, where fleets of kayaks, canoes, and tubes send groups on aquatic journeys into nature.
As watercraft meander down the river, they pass the habitats of local wildlife including deer, bald eagles, geese, and feral former child stars. Alternatively, rental bicycles facilitate on-land adventures, and two primitive campsites let visitors sleep along the river's bank.
Inside The River?s Edge's shop, friendly staff members help customers to purchase kayaks and aquatic gear, or choose the best bait and tackle to catch schools of fish crackers. They also add a touch of nature to homes at a garden center.
Sterling Bedding hand selects a diverse collection of mattresses and other bedtime essentials to fill its network of North American show rooms. Through appointment-only shopping, patrons can get a one-on-one tour of traditional, pillow-top, and memory-foam mattresses organized conveniently by price point, as well as a selection of fashionable bed frames and bedroom furniture. By setting up shop in warehouses and forgoing the high rents associated with flashy retail spaces or shops set inside limousines, Sterling is able to keep operating costs low and set competitive prices that allow the savings to trickle down to the customer.
An upscale fiber-arts boutique, Yarns By Design keeps its shelves stocked with high-quality yarns, patterns, and other supplies from all over the globe. Every month, visitors put those materials to work during a number of classes and clubs. Beginning crochet classes, for instance, cover basic techniques and stitches, and needle-felting classes teach students how to use felting needles to create 3D animals. Throughout the year, YBD also offers special workshops hosted by talented designers.
Allegheny Smokeworks invites puffers to experience the smoky serenity of an old-fashioned tobacco shop, complete with a plush smoking lounge, custom blending bar, and a stupendous stock of quality smokeables. Current in-stock selections include Rocky Patel's The Edge, a bold cigar that blends notes of espresso and spice as seamlessly as a flamenco-dancing barista ($5.95); the Liga Privada No. 9 wraps together seven different tobaccos ripe with chocolate, pepper, and nut flavors for a satisfying smoke that finishes with a hint of sweetness ($10.95). The Arturo Fuente Double Chateau boasts traces of vanilla and cocoa and––like the most fashionable of pine trees––wears nothing but a cedar sleeve ($5.80), and cigar collectors will be pleased to peruse a selection of hard-to-find stogies from brands such as Padron 1964 and Cuvee Don Pepin.
Allegheny Arts Gallery's instructors operate under the artistic eye of Robert Buchanan, an established purveyor of painted, sculpted, sketched, and vibrantly designed artwork. Each week, classes will comprehensively break down the techniques and workflows required to ease conceptual development. Elicit a smile from an inanimate object while pursuing still-life art, immortalize a mountain through carefully placed brushstrokes in the landscape art class, or canvas-capture the human body with a lasso of ink in figure drawing. Classes last two hours each.
