With their roomy fit and outlandish patterns, it might not be surprising to learn that the first fans of Zubaz were not zebras, but bodybuilders. In fact, the company's founders were originally gym owners who realized that their patrons needed pants that could both fit over and call attention to their sizeable muscles. The apparel soon proved itself outside of weightlifting circles, as the company has since made more than 9,000,000 pairs of the stretchy, stripy pants?enough to mark a path from New York to Los Angeles and back. Available in the colors of virtually any professional sports team, Zubaz regularly make stadium appearances on fans, players, and mascots alike. And today, the brand emblazons their classic pattern on other articles as well, from sunglasses to footwear to hoodies to neckties.

Perched atop Liberty University's tranquil, 5,000 acre mountain, the Snowflex Centre unfurls an innovative system of slopes for year-round skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Thrill-seekers of all skill levels soar across the venue's synthetic winter wonderland, which uses Snowflex technology and a patented misting system to mirror the behavior of real-world snowfalls. Hidden beneath crisp, white drifts, multiple layers of cushions absorb potential tumbles, emboldening snow-thusiasts to attempt free-style tricks (on an elevated drop), triple kickers, and a large quarter pipe. Guests seeking reprieve from supersonic spins and relentless, panhandling snowmen can kick back inside a two-story lodge.

Each Bloop Frozen Yogurt location keeps a lineup of frozen yogurt machines churning out 10–16 rotating flavors in nonfat, low-fat, and no-sugar-added forms—not to mention nondairy sorbet options such as watermelon and pink lemonade. Cups pile high with Godiva dark chocolate, cake batter, and real strawberry yogurt and a wide array of toppings such as M&Ms, gummy worms, and seasonal fruits. The frozen treat innovators encourage enthusiasts to submit their own outrageous flavor ideas in hopes that one day, wishes for a yogurt inspired by Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey can finally be fulfilled. Every Bloop cup of yogurt purchased provides a cup of clean drinking water to areas in need through the A Cup 4 A Cup initiative. So far, the Bloop chain has donated more than 42,000 cups, and a goal for each new store is to provide a new drinking well to a needy community.

If the round, pastel-colored tables at Lynchburg’s Sundae Grill could speak, they might regale listeners with stories of their earlier life, spent at a Disney World café frequented by the park’s most animated characters. Given the same chance, the pink and baby-blue booths would not speak but rather sing; though they now host a continual stream of diners come to sample the restaurant’s famous burgers and sundaes, they once belonged to pop sensation Celine Dion. With more than 101 choices of ice cream and desserts—including a staggering 56 sundae options—Sundae Grill lives up to and continues to build on the legacies of its own furnishings. Though the diner’s marinated, seasoned, and charbroiled burgers have won local awards throughout the years, owners BH and Mrs. K insist on rounding out their menu with recipes culled from across America—BH personally traveled the country looking for the most interesting hot-dog recipes from each region. This same dedication to variety informs Mrs. K’s lengthy list of so-called super sundaes. Local favorites include a caramel-pecan combination topped with whipped cream and a Death by Chocolate selection served with a napkin that doubles as a last will and testament.

At a young age, budding hairstylist Sylvain Melloul joined the L’Oréal Professionnel artistic team—which took him from the salons of Paris to those of Washington D.C. As his English vocabulary grew, so did his fan base, which led him to open his own salon in 1974. But things didn’t run as smoothly as expected. Sylvain’s staff lacked the background knowledge to perform up to his standards, a lapse he felt compelled to fix. He did so by opening a school where scores of stylists could learn the fundamentals of a professional cut. The school remains in session today, with students wielding L’Oréal products as they learn to snip, color, and highlight tresses.
