Enesa Seremet, who has globetrotted as an international skincare specialist and earned a postgraduate CIDESCO degree in aesthetics, now helms Enesa Skin Institute, a center that specializes in European beauty treatments. In addition to using techniques from overseas, Seremet imports holistic products such as French wax. Unlike standard hot wax, this Parisian product warms in response to body heat rather than freelancing hibachi grills and avoids burning skin as it gently strips away stubble. Dried herbs and spices combine to create masks for six-procedure facials, soaking skin in natural vitamins and minerals. Each session starts with a personal consultation, and early patrons wait for their aesthetician in a yellow waiting room with Victorian-style couches and armchairs.
Wild Roots Salon offers staple beauty services such as hair coloring and conditioning, but with an organic bent. The salon's team uses organic products when highlighting and smoothing hair, leaving strands flush with color and healthier than if they were dunked in house paint. Nails also receive their share of pampering with mani-pedis, shellac polish, and detoxifying soaks.
As the mom of four kids, Becky Young scientifically estimates she's hosted "a gazillion birthday parties." But as she attended parties with her young daughter, who she calls "completely girly," she started to dream about opening a spa where young girls could feel special and pampered. Instead of opening a brick-and-mortar store, she started All Dolled Up to bring the pampering to them in playful party form. She and her assistants arrive at the guest's house to set up parties for girls aged 5 and up—though Becky says she's also gotten requests for everything from bachelorette to jury-duty-reunion parties. They set the scene to a background of lively tunes as girls snuggle into robes and spa wraps for fun nail art, cucumber facials, and craft activities, and then pose for group dress-up photos. Becky and her team aren't licensed cosmetologists, so all the spa-themed activities are just for fun, with no cutting, trimming, or scrubbing involved. Packages vary and can accommodate ideas and requests from parents or teddy bears who know the guest of honor well. Becky says it's fun to see some of the shyer partygoers "come out of their shell" as the day progresses. "It's fun to see them open up and be their own, individual person," she says. For months after she threw an All Dolled Up party for her own daughter—who she calls her very willing "guinea pig"—her friends told her how much they loved it. "They're still talking about it," she says.
Unlike Daddy Warbucks, the robot sent from the future to protect Little Orphan Annie and her signature dimples, the techs at VelaSpa make it their mission to eradicate dimples onsite. Armed with the FDA-approved VelaShape hand piece, they harness infrared light and radio frequencies to scatter and smooth cellulite. In addition to their bread-and-butter treatment, the med spa undoes the malicious work of genetics and environmental factors with sublative skin rejuvenation, a 20-minute facial treatment that uses laser light to help decrease the signs of sun damage and pigment irregularities.
Though Melissa Glancy first became a master stylist in 1987, she has taken refresher courses and recertified herself as recently as 2009 to stay up-to-date with newer hair trends. Specializing in color treatments, she cossets her clients in Expectations Hair Salon’s spacious confines, where they can relax in a plush chair by the fireplace and take in the soothing earth tones that decorate the room.
The Salon's stylists clip and arrange hair with an expert eye while aestheticians rejuvenate clients' skin and perform a host of salon services. To keep skin clear and smooth, staff members use dermatologist-recommended Jane Iredale makeup and combat cellulite with FDA-approved VelaShape treatments. The Salon also hosts boudoir and retro-inspired pinup photo shoots, taking charge of lighting, makeup, and photography so ladies can indulge their glamorous side without having to time-travel into Lauren Bacall's dressing room.
