When Katie Kaplan graduated from Suffolk University with a master's degree in business, she found herself struggling to find a job in the midst of a recession. After finally landing a high-stress, low-paying position, she realized she had to make a career change. Katie decided to attend The Salter School, earned her massage license, and joined the ranks of the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals by donning their trademark foam fingers. Today, she helps others find overall wellness through massage modalities that can mend injuries, ease the discomforts of pregnancy, and quell anxiety. Kate also volunteered her services at a charity event raising funds and awareness for multiple sclerosis.

Ocean House Surf Shop and Cafe isn't just a place you get the latest surfing gear. It's a place where people go to experience the ocean in new ways. Staff lead group and individual surfing lessons in which they cover the basics of paddling, balancing, and turning on rental boards from top brands such as Rip Curl and Walden. For those looking for something more unique, they also have a yoga instructor on staff who teaches classes atop standup paddleboards afloat at sea. To help fuel surfers, SUPers, and yogis, staff also serve up cafe fare such as scones, coffee, and paninis. These confer a healthy boost of energy to surfers without the risks of wearing battery packs in the ocean.
Well-lit and painstakingly organized, Used Book Superstores upend images of the precariously balanced stacks and dusty hardcovers most people associate with used book stores. More than 100,000 new and gently used books—from current bestsellers to staples of the literary world—sprawl across each of the five mammoth locations, which, like so many shattered crates of tea, dot the landscape of the greater Boston and south New Hampshire region. As bookworms hunker down with hardcovers, paperbacks, and children's books, neglected friends can peruse the store's voluminous selection of music, DVDs, and toys, all of which sell for a fraction of their original cost.
Signature service: Art Classes
Staff Size: 2?10 people
Average Duration of Services: 1?2 hours
Pro Tip: Individual creativity is encouraged, acrylic paint will stain, no painting experience required
What is one of your signature services? How is it performed?
Class instructors are professional artists and matriculated educators. They cultivate individual creativity through step-by-step guidance in color mixing and acrylic painting techniques.
Besides making clients happy, what do you like most about your job?
That everyone has their own style and voice when engaging in the creative process. I love sharing outlets for creative expression with strangers, and in turn watching them realize their own unique gifts and abilities through the medium of paint.
What aspect of your job, or the services you offer, most often surprises people?
The creative abilities of participants who thought they lacked artistic skill.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Shelscapes offers professional classes where artistic process is more celebrated than product. Fun is encouraged, along with enjoying a night out, but more importantly [they help] wind down from the routine of modern life and engage the mind in a new and challenging way.
