The fairways at Deer Run Country Club beckon golfers along an immaculately crosshatched carpet of plush bent grass. Whittled from a rolling blanket of forest by architect Mike Macke, the 18-hole course forms a heart-shaped patch surrounding several arteries of pristine residential streets and five ponds lurking in wait. After building up an appetite while hacking out of the rough and taking in the beauteous Ohio River Valley setting, players can fill up on wings, pizzas, and half-pound burgers at the Fairway Grill.

While most people know how to breathe, very few can do so underwater without the proper equipment and training. In Too Deep Scuba’s open-water PADI certification courses provide just that, pairing classroom instruction with swimming-pool practice dives in which participants don full scuba gear. Students can plunge deeper into the world of aquatic exploration by pursuing other certifications, earning a new status as a rescue diver, master scuba diver, or ship’s mermaid figurehead. In Too Deep Scuba’s team also schedules trips where divers can hone their skills in exotic waters, such as Florida’s Crystal River and Bonne Terre Mine. Before excursions, divers can stock up on an array of gear from Pinnacle Aquatics, Cressi-sub, Ocean Reef, and other outfitters.
Clifton Meadows Tennis and Swim Club maintains a 10-acre facility of three recirculating swimming pools and six tennis courts (two with artificial grass) to support its dedicated teams of racket-handlers and swan-divers. Tennis instructor Ben Britton, head of the tennis team, also conducts private and group lessons to help students master spin better than a yo-yo champion politician. The private lesson affords the opportunity for thwackers to take in some personal practice with Ben; guests can also elect to join group lessons to hone their serves, forehands, and Hulk hands.
