Both of Shoreline Fitness's clubs welcome guests to their more than 15,000-square-foot training studios, which are packed with cardio machines and strength-training equipment to assist them on their journeys to overall fitness.

The studio serves as a year-round practice venue with its golf simulator, which lets you drive, pitch, and putt your way through famous golf courses brought to life on an immense screen.
On any given day, the nonsimulated, three-dimensional PGA pro Jon Wilson can also be found in the studio dispensing advice in private and group lessons. From mid-March through October, Jon also conducts conventional lessons at Kleins’ Golf Range. He’ll even travel to area courses to provide playing lessons, during which golfers can gain insight into course management and how to fix ball marks with an extra-long fingernail.
The classes at CrossFit Battleground—intense, constantly varied workouts based on natural movements—are as ideal for first-time exercisers as they are for professional athletes, and that's the way the coaches like it. The crux of the program is the workout of the day, a full-body session that is performed with speed and intensity, borrowing functional movements from Olympic lifts, kettlebell training, plyometrics, and body-weight exercises. These workouts can be tailored to any exerciser by simply decreasing the weight, scaling down the intensity, or moving the workout to one of Earth’s few patches of land that aren’t affected by gravity. CrossFit Battleground challenges students to these regimens in classes held up to seven times per day, making missing class all but impossible.
Recently named the state’s best family dining restaurant by Connecticut Managzine, Chips’ Pub III fills the bellies of its guests with steaks, seafood, and other homestyle dishes. An impressive list of 15 hand-pressed burgers, each char-broiled over an open hearth, dominates the menu, which also features Chips’ specialties such as the Primo prime rib with housemade horseradish, and platters of scallops, shrimp, and calamari.
A crack rings out from the jousting arena as armored knights clash in the pursuit of honor, while sword-swallowers thrill crowds with their death-defying art, jesters spin windy jokes, and townspeople in 15th-century garb roam the grounds tearing into turkey legs with their teeth. The Connecticut Renaissance Faire hosts these medieval-theme blowouts every year, including the Robin Hood Spring Festival and King Arthur’s Fall Harvest Faire. Under the themed umbrella of each gathering, actors caper about a constructed medieval village, engaging in Old English–flavored conversation and clapping games with fair-goers. In a tented marketplace, vendors sell beaded crafts, art, and tyrannical-king repellent alongside stands serving mead, beer, and other satisfying sundries. Although the shows and events vary at each fair, past spectacles have included archery displays, pub sing-alongs, and costume parades.
Ballou’s Wine Bar revolves around three prized delicacies: chocolate, wine, and coffee. From those staples, dozens of indulgent dishes ensue, including chocolate, Nutella, and peanut-butter-chocolate fondues and homemade truffles developed by Debbie, half of the husband-and-wife team that runs Ballou’s. In addition to rich desserts and froth-capped cups of cappuccino, guests can order wines from local and international vineyards, as well as a wide selection of pastas, sandwiches, and flat breads.
