LA Boxing offers fitness classes in boxing, kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and mixed martial arts. The proprietary style of the LA Boxing workout is a mixture of genuine fight training, engaging fitness, and stronger-than-Earth gravity. Quasi-boxers and martial artists can burn from 800 to more than 1,000 calories during these total-body routines, which combine external inspiration and jukes, jabs, and kicks. Both men and women are welcome in the ring, where they'll learn new techniques and methods to blissfully break into a sweat in an energetic group setting. Gloves are provided during the month-long trial membership, as are a set of reusable pro-quality hand wraps and complimentary motivational mumbling from Mickey Goldmill (all three subject to availability).
UFC Gym is not a standard fitness center playing dress-up as a boxing studio—its pugilists hit away at 150-pound punching bags while wearing 16-ounce gloves and bobbing and weaving on high-impact floors, and don't have to share space with dance-aerobics classes—but neither is it the dank boxing gym of yesteryear.
Alongside the high-quality boxing equipment in the brightly lit gym are free weights and cardio and strength machines to mold a well-rounded fighter. In addition to boxing, trainers, most of whom have amateur or professional fighting experience, teach muay thai kickboxing, mixed martial arts, kids' self-defense classes, and personal training.
Master Byung Uk Kim owns World Champion’s K Tae Kwon Do, but helming the studio is hardly the most impressive stat on his martial-arts résumé. A seventh-dan black belt, Master Kim’s tae kwon do experience spans the globe—he was the head coach of the USA’s Junior Olympic Team, and a 10-time national champion in Korea, the sport’s country of origin.
At his two New Jersey studios, Master Kim currently teaches his specialty to students of all experience levels and belt hues, aided by a team of trainers. Beyond courses in their namesake discipline, the studios also host free cardio-kickboxing nights for parents every Tuesday, as well as tae kwon do–themed birthday parties.
Sweat Factory's trainers expect hard work of their exercisers, but for good reason. Their CrossFit workouts change every day, which means muscles never become complacent and stop changing. CrossFit's blend of conditioning, gymnastics, weightlifting, and throwing helps clients power right through weight-loss plateaus.
Greg Crawford, the owner at My Training Gym, has fitness certifications from three associations: National Strength and Conditioning, US Weightlifting, and World Kickboxing. This mixed background allows him and his staff to keep hearts pumping, engage all the muscles, and avoid boring routines. Traditional boot camp routines get a dose of boxing and kickboxing drills mixed in. This variety extends to the schedule and the pricing, as well—aside from boot camp sessions, there are programs such as boxing and kickboxing classes and personal training.
To supplement the fitness classes, Greg offers a 21-day kick-start and body transformation package. It’s designed to help nurture one to total health through nutritionally sound meal plans, self-improvement workshops, daily affirmations, and regular high-fives from the 1975 Harlem Globetrotters.
At Parisi Fitness Center, visitors boost their health and well-being not only through the professional guidance of a staff of fitness specialists but also through the support and motivation of their fellow members. In this friendly group environment, guests give their lower back and core muscles a tune-up during Nancy Gorra's Pilates Reformer classes. In one-on-one personal-training sessions, a team of extensively certified personal trainers and fitness experts ensure that clients maximize their workout efficiency and refrain from accidentally swallowing any free weights. After sweating to Latin tunes during Zumba sessions, or targeting and toning problem areas with boot-camp workouts, members can pick their kids up from the complimentary childcare center, or enjoy a muscle-building shake or light fruit beverage from the juice bar.
