Throughout the eight-week summer session, the School of Nashville Ballet offers a variety of dance classes for people of all skill levels. Experience is not necessary for the classes, which are all taught by professional instructors. Dance styles covered in classes include jazz dance, hip-hop, contemporary, or tap. The modern and fusion Pilates fitness-dance classes are open for all who wish to get in shape and groove at the same time, while ballet-minded individuals can choose from several options. The intro-to-ballet class teaches the basics, and intermediate and advanced ballet classes help students hone their skills and master tricky maneuvers. Beginners are encouraged to attend classes early in the session, as instruction will progress throughout the season. Check the schedule and call the School of Nashville Ballet for specific information on class availability.
Of all the positive things that have led Joke Factory Comedy Club to succeed, two may be the most potent: the regular lineups of local and nationally touring standup talent and the sheer moxie of veteran comic and Florida talkshow host Artie Fletcher. The latter of those two helped nurture the venue's capacity to host the former, prompting popular southern comic Eddie Caylor to dub the Joke Factory "the little club that could and did." Today, after having firmly established itself on the comedy scene, the venue serves up big laughs every Friday and Saturday, alongside its signature adult beverage, "The Joke."
Celebrate the second annual 5K run/walk through the lush, rolling hills and thick vernal woodlands of Lincoln State Park. Winding through most of the park's scenic pathways, this Lincoln-jog traverses the man's boyhood hills, where, from the ages of 7 to 21, he mastered oratory at the price of shaving skills. The money raised by this event supports the DNR, Friends of Lincoln State Park, the wardens of this historic parcel, and funding toward the park's amphitheatre programs. Learn about upcoming commemorative events on the theater's Facebook page. Event T-shirts will be available while supplies last or until a John Wilkes Booth impersonator fires the starter pistol at 9 a.m. CDT.
Dance Theatre of Tennessee trains students in the art of dance and dazzles audiences with world-class performances. "Swan Lake – At 75: A Tribute to Elaine Thomas" honors Dance Theatre of Tennessee’s artistic director, who has served as coach, choreographer, and ballet mistress to prominent companies around the world. Audiences aim their eyes at the stage as guest artists from Ballet West, Pennsylvania Ballet, Texas Ballet Theater, and The Australian Ballet celebrate Elaine’s career with accolades and ritual burnings of DDR games. The tribute culminates in a spectacular staging of act 2 of Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet, Swan Lake.
The fleet-footed instructors of National Dance Clubs shepherd students of all skill levels through a variety of dance styles and techniques. Aspiring hip-swivelers can acquire the moves necessary to woo passersby into impromptu swing sessions with an introductory dance package, which includes two private 50-minute lessons to get the dance ball rhythmically rolling. Solo dancers—who will be paired with an instructor—and cha-chaing couples take to the 2,000-square-foot dance floor, learning the steps, dips, and secret handshakes of American, international, and social dance disciplines, including bolero, fox trot, rumba, waltz, and tango.
Accompanied by the euphonic flourishes of the Nashville Symphony, the talented Nashville Opera cast delivers Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, the third most popular opera in the world, with twittering uvulas, booming voices, and grand gestures. During the 2.75-hour performance, rib cages expand to illustrate a heartfelt portrait of a courtesan forced to give up the man of her dreams and the saint bernard puppy she bought in college. Like a drunken pizza order, the opera is sung in Italian with projected English translations. Both performances occur in the Andrew Jackson Hall of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, a venue with a 2,474-person capacity.
