As an accomplished ballroom-dance instructor and television actor, Ed Nix derives joy from seeing his students land coveted roles. The Nix Performing Arts Center is meant to help them across each stepping stone, from introductory classes to audition prep. While highly skilled teachers pass on their expertise in dancing, acting, voice work, and modeling, pupils perfect their maneuvers atop the marley and sprung flooring of the 1,000-square-foot facility.
NixPAC welcomes guests of all experience levels, whether they are aiming to dazzle cruise-line talent scouts or are simply harnessing a sense of rhythm. Staff members strive to cultivate a familial bond with their groups; they readily dispense career advice on choosing a future dance school, where they then send care packages filled with extra feet.
Four professional soccer teams from three continents battle for international soccer supremacy during the inaugural Hawaiian Islands Invitational. During the tournament's opening game, Korea's Busan I'Park attempts to corral the dangerous midfield of Melbourne Heart FC, led by former MLS standout and Brazil native Fred, who staggers defenses with prolific playmaking and sparklers attached to his cleats. Thursday's second matchup between Yokohama FC and 2010 MLS champion Colorado Rapids entices uproarious chants from the crowd as legendary Japanese striker Kazuyoshi "Kazu" Miura vaults headers into the airspace of American goalie Matt Pickens. On Saturday, the first-round victors will face off for bragging rights as tournament champions, and the consolation game awards third-place finishers and sentences losers to a year of peeling potatoes and freshly picked soccer balls.
One of Hawaii’s most expansive block parties delivers thunderous beats and intoxicating rhythms from more than two dozen musical acts sprawled across three venues. After checking in at Gordon Biersch, Groupon holders can bop between three Aloha Tower alehouses, sampling sonic entertainment at harborside spots such as Don Ho’s and The Waterfront. Tunesmiths drum out reggae and island rhythms from the plateau of four stages, while DJs spin house, hip-hop, and disco remixes of Ezra Pound’s The Cantos. Join Positive Motion for a celebratory spin at their CD-release party or float away on the eddies of Tribal Seeds' beguiling reggae-infused roots rock.
Fire dancers, fireworks and all-night tunes can only mean one thing—it’s the New Year’s Eve “Party of the Year," top-rated by the Honolulu Pulse in 2012 and 2013. Divided into different zones, the party offers more than 20 live bands—including national recording artists The Cataracs—and DJs that pump out hits throughout the evening. Partiers enjoy entertainment such as food trucks, beer gardens, an LED ferris wheel, and carnival games. Hourly fireworks shows lead up to the big finish, a $25K display set to help ring in the new year at midnight.
Marking its 25th anniversary, the Santa Barbara Concours d'Elegance, which benefits the United Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara, wheels rare-collector cars and motorcycles onto well-manicured fields. The classic-car show exhibits haute jalopies such as Ferraris, Austin Healeys, and Alfa Romeos, most of which hail from 1927–1957. Revel in the smooth lines of the 1956 Fiat Eden Roc or challenge the special Indy 500 factory pace car to a race. During the Concours d'Elegance grand-finale event, which will highlight a 1939 Bugatti Type 57C once owned by the shah of Iran, horseless-carriage experts judge 20 vehicle classes and award prizes, including Best in Show, at 2 p.m. The spotlight moves from sleek rides to wines during the second-annual Vino d'Elegance event both Saturday and Sunday. The soiree will include a cooking demonstration by Scott Leibfried of Fox's Hell's Kitchen, a book signing by Sideways author Rex Pickett, and a Halloween trick-or-treat event for kids. Though it is not included in this Groupon, patrons can upgrade the general-admission package to include a tasting and sample local, national, and international grape concoctions celebrating the harvest season and Zeus's birthday. VIP upgrades are also available.
The instructors at Hawaii State Ballet aspire to give their students the best possible training in all areas of dance. And they've achieved that goal many times over, thanks to the Junior Company, whose alumni have gone on to dance for the Joffrey Ballet, the American Ballet Theatre, and Ballet West.
The dedicated staff guides students from soft shoes to toe shoes, starting with imaginative classes for 3-year-olds. They also teach adult classes, and branch out from ballet to teach modern dance, Pilates, and advanced Hokey Pokey.
