The staff at Clubex Fitness & Nutrition for Women believes that when it comes to diet and exercise, success is a team effort. That's why the trainers host about 30 different group exercise classes every week, including Pilates, circuit training, and Zumba. Clients looking for a more specialized approach can work one-on-one with personal trainers.

Of course, the facility also allows guests to exercise on their own. Clubex provides for solo workouts with cardio machines, strength-training equipment, and free weights, which keep the gym from blowing away in strong winds. Nutritional programs encourage healthy lifestyle changes, and onsite childcare helps moms-on-the-go enjoy carefree exercise.

If you've never been to a Healthworks gym before, today's Groupon is just for you (sorry, regulars). It gets you a "class pass," which lets you attend classes at any of Healthworks' five locations: Back Bay, Brookline, Cambridge, Chestnut Hill, or Salem. You can also use the locker rooms, saunas, steam rooms and whirlpools. Work out, then relax in the bubbling waters and daydream about how good you'll look when bathing suit season rolls around. And because Healthworks is women-only, Larry Leering and Stanley Stare-Master won't be around to ogle you as you bust the moves.

Q&A with Micah, Owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

It?s no secret that reaching our fitness goals is hard. We?ll teach you how to perform the most efficient multijoint exercises, and how to do them safely. We make it fun, too. Each workout is different, so you?ll never get bored doing the same old routine. And it?s tailored to your individual skill level, no matter how fit you are. You will never be on your own, lost and confused, like at typical gyms. You?ll get individualized attention and encouragement. We keep classes small to ensure that each client feels supported, successful, and motivated.

What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?

The most dramatic change I've seen a client make was that they dropped their body-fat percentage by 7 percent in 45 days. Typically, dedicated people will lose 3 percent?4 percent of their body fat within that time.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

Rather than trying to train specific muscles or cardio, we train for better movement. The goal of movement training is critical to quality of life?to maintain or restore abilities such as lifting, reaching, agility, stepping up, squatting (i.e., sitting and standing), and running. Our safe methods of developing strength, range, and flexibility?whether to restore lost movement or to increase an already high level of fitness?allow our clients to exceed their expectations.

During the winter, people often miss the smell of the beach. Unless they have a membership at Beverly Athletic Club, that is. The gym boasts a 65-foot indoor pool, heated to a comfortable temperature, and filled with saltwater mild enough not to sting anyone's eyes. Visitors can take a dip in its ocean-emulating confines during open swim, or hit up an array of pool-based classes such as Aquatic Zumba, a less-stressful alternative to tap-dancing over a dunk tank.

Of course, the unique chlorine-free pool is just one of the benefits BAC offers its members. Its two locations boast group fitness classes, which run the gamut from RPM, an indoor cycling program, to BodyCombat, a martial arts-inspired workout that draws on disciplines such as karate, muay thai, and boxing. Personal trainers, meanwhile, lead more personalized workouts, while a childcare center helps little visitors learn to love an active lifestyle by providing access to play structures such as a rock wall and ball pit.
