James Deirmendjian had a decorated career as a brazilian jujitsu practitioner, winning martial-arts competitions and teaching submission grappling. He's parlayed that success into opening Fight Fit Training, where he helps clients get fit through boxing and kickboxing training, kettlebell workouts, and traditional lifting.
Tom Bloom's distinguished martial-arts career began more than 30 years ago when he was a student at Chuck Norris Karate School. Similar to the school's namesake, Bloom would spend the next three decades fostering the sport of martial arts. He co-captained the USA Karate team from 1984–88; received black belts in tae kwon do, hapkido, shippalgi, and kung fu; and helped train more than 300 students and 1 ostrich to black-belt-level status. Today, Bloom and his staff continue carrying the torch by leading martial-arts and fitness classes for students of all ages.

Surrounded by clean, spartan walls and a network of like-minded fellow athletes, clients of all skill levels and body types swing kettlebells, hoist weights, climb ropes, and do sit-ups, with workouts that change everyday to challenge and surprise the body.
Tarzana Boxing & Fitness's instructors employ their experiences to craft an array of martial-arts classes that emphasize aerobic fitness as well as self-defense. Boxing and kickboxing sessions lead guests through a total-body cardiovascular workout. Each class begins with 10–15 minutes of stretching and calisthenics before 30 minutes of pulverizing an assortment of 150-pound punching bags and dusty carpets. Cardio boxing and kickboxing classes do not involve physical contact between students, instead directing brutal jabs and witty putdowns onto thick-skinned punching bags. One-hour muay thai classes delve further into the art of self-defense, teaching students of any age how to use their fists, elbows, knees, and feet to effortlessly split cantaloupes at family picnics.
Perhaps the only thing as impressive as Roy Elghanayan’s reign as a two-time Israeli Krav Maga National Champion is the students with whom he’s shared his incredible skill. He first was hand-chosen to devise the Israeli Special Forces’ training program. In 2011, the Argentinean Marines enlisted him to teach the sport to their soldiers. He even trained actress Jessica Chastain for her role in the movie The Debt. Today, he continues to travel the world to teach Krav Maga and works out of his studio, Krav Maga L.A.
Krav maga is a more rigorous form of self-defense developed by the Israeli military when they realized that ancient martial arts would translate to modern battlefields. Roy and his staff helm classes for both adults and children as part of a six-day schedule that divides students by their skill level. Beginners’ classes corral 18 participants or less so that instructors can easily oversee technique while still having enough bodies to build a human pyramid if morale is low. With continued practice, the instructors at Krav Maga L.A. hope to imbue their students with the physical and mental skill to escape threatening situations should they ever arise.
