Before looking through the camera lens, the expert photographers at Picture People spend time getting to know their subjects and establishing a strategy for conveying their personalities in print. Then, film-ready clients pose in the bright camera room, airing teeth amid colorful backdrops and creative props. Following snapshots, subjects make their way to the selection station to choose their favorite poses from their session, which may be treated with sepia tones, color accents, and decorative borders to suit any wall, wallet, wallpaper pattern, or trophy walleye.

For decades, JCPenney Portraits has welcomed families into its friendly studios, where photographers expertly photograph subjects of any age. Digital cameras, professional lighting, and a wide selection of backgrounds all work together to ensure a polished, personalized look for every family portrait, school picture, business headshot, or baby announcement. To customize the session even more, the staff also encourages guests to incorporate items with special meaning such as a baby blanket, a family heirloom, or the wishbone from grandma's first Thanksgiving.
After the final flash, clients and a team member head to the viewing kiosk, where they can select their photos and customize them. Beyond prints, memories may also be preserved on high-resolution MyImages CDs, gallery wraps, or through JCPenney Portraits' archival program, which allows clients to store and share their portraits online.
When Carrie Karki began her study of photography more than 20 years ago, her interest wasn't in grinning families. As a horticulturalist, she took many close-up pictures of plants and insects, capturing her beloved nature in great detail. These photos still form a notable portion of her portfolio, where she's captured the multicolored kernels of freshly picked corn, the channeled bark of an austere tree, the futility of a praying mantis trying to woo a hood ornament. She takes this eye for the sublime and her affection for the outdoors into her sessions with humans, setting them in pleasing lighting within outdoor scapes. An impish child may peer from between the bars of an iron fence, or a coursing river may become the backdrop for a family tableau.
Former Masters champion Fred Couples has competed on golf courses around the globe. So he had plenty of inspiration to draw from in designing Westfields Golf Club, which incorporates Northern Virginia's unique topography into its 18 holes. Amid the rolling hills, natural wetlands, and towering beech and oak trees that pepper the course, a lake looms to the left of the signature third hole as players take their tee shots. Other features make the course unmistakably Virginian—on hole 13, for instance, a Civil War burial site comes into play on the right side. After taking in all the course has to offer, players can relax and untangle their coiled hips by visiting the clubhouse's indoor and outdoor dining areas.
Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 71 course * Total length of 6,897 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 73.3 from the back tees * Course slope of 139 from the back tees * Five sets of tees per hole * Scorecard
