Across Xtreme Paintball's three outdoor fields, colorful salvos paint the sky as opposing gunsmiths duke it out during simulated battles. The warzone field sets the stage for intense scenarios such as capture the flag and team elimination, during which players attempt to mark each opposing paintballer or stick a Kick Me sign to their back. The open-air arenas play host to casual paintball outings, special events, and league play. Xtreme Paintball's safety-focused experts monitor each 3?10 minute skirmish. The staff also checks over equipment between each game, whether players rent their gear or airdrop it in from home.

"Tread softly," say players on Insane Paintball?s outdoor forts course. No matter how careful you are on the ground, opponents likely lurk atop the field?s 14 one- and two-story buildings, waiting to strike on the unsuspecting players below. More buildings tower above the wooded field, where teams can take cover behind mounds and old, paint-splattered cars. Those pellets fire from Insane Paintball?s semi-automatic rental guns, part of gear packages that include face masks and compressed-air bottles. Snacks await players after long stretches of recreational, scenario, or tournament games, as do shopping sprees inside an on-site 3,500-square-foot retail store. Besides stocking new gear, the store hosts certified technicians, who repair malfunctioning equipment such as guns that only let players load crayon nubs.

The rustle of feet swiftly move over grass as quick successions of pops echo off the sides of gutted vans and cars. Over the splatter of shots fired, orders are yelled out as teams communicate strategy. These sounds are music to the ears of all players that patrol the hallowed grounds of Nashville Paintball. The five fields present visitors with obstacles such as inflatable Xs, large industrial piping, and old cars targeted by paintballs of games past. While Nashville Paintball's fields received an expert's touch when designed, they cater to players of all levels, even offering games arranged specifically for beginners. Keeping the sport even more accessible, they rent paintball markers and gear and don't check for abstract art degrees at the door.

The expert staff at Phoenix Paintball Division oversees multiple fields sprawling across 30 acres of paintball action. A woods field cloaks artistic assassins with trees and bunkers, and a tire-and-hay field conceals teams as they rally together toward victory. As in marital disputes between pro athletes, trained referees strictly enforce all rules, making safety the top priority at Phoenix. The pro shop rents and sells all necessary equipment, accessories, and apparel, as well as food and drinks to keep players fueled during friendly outings, group events, or special occasions, such as birthday parties.

Foaming white rapids rush down the Ocoee River as birds chatter from within the leaves of towering trees. For more than two decades, this has been the home of Adventures Unlimited, an environmentally sustainable full-service resort rolling with 30 acres of campgrounds, cabins, and whitewater-rafting facilities. Landscaping and gardens highlight native plants and animals, vehicles run on biodiesel fuel, and any construction efforts use sustainable materials or rocks that everyone was always tripping over anyway. The family-operated adventure company launches groups on whitewater-rafting trips through the tumultuous currents of the local Ocoee and Hiwassee Rivers or further afield in Costa Rica. To facilitate dry-land exploration and provide an energy outlet for serial finger painters, they also recently opened an outdoor wooded paintball field supplied by a full rental shop.

With classic replica airsoft guns aimed, teams navigate a 25,000-square-foot indoor battlefield. Within the battlefield's three playing areas, gun-toters conceal themselves behind stacks of tires, stationary vehicles, and small wooden buildings. As combatants slink behind crates and boxes in the shadows, opposing players ferret them out using the light affixed to their weapons and a streaming fire of plastic BBs zipping at speeds up to 375 feet per second. Game play in the radioactive room commences under the glow of black lights that turn the graffiti-laden grounds phosphorescent and opponents' teeth bluer than their songs about battles lost. Adjacent to the battleground, airsoft enthusiasts mingle in the lounge space equipped with a retail shop, party area, and arcade for parties and group events.
