Though Jasmine Micaela Sharp and Aimee Goeppner managed to cross paths in the same Pilates class one day, the journeys that led each one to that class were much different. Aimee became serious about taking care of herself after having six children, knowing she needed to boost her energy and equip her body to deal with a lot of activity. Jasmine, meanwhile, had been battling obesity since she was a child, turning to sports as an adolescent and later to Pilates and yoga to help slim her silhouette. Their success with Pilates led them to co-found formu+La Pilates + Juice, where they even use Pilates machines of Jasmine's own design. Today, those who come to their studio find a class selection that includes everything from traditional Pilates and gentle flow sessions to beachfront yoga and SVELTE courses focused on lengthening the body.

Of course, Pilates is only half of what they do at formu+La. Jasmine grew up in central California where she had easy access to fresh fruits, honey, mint, and veggies, and Aimee is so infectious with her love of nutrition that she even has a 1-year-old who adores beet juice. After a class, students can head to an onsite juice bar that serves cold-pressed juices, nut milks, and tonics made strictly from organic local produce and herbs, including plant-based nutritional products from VEGA. The beverages are designed to replace the water, electrolytes, and pocket-stashed snacks lost during exercise, fulfilling the second part of Aimee and Jasmine's motto—Feel Your Body, Fuel Your Body.

Eating healthy can be a challenge, but when a truck playing catchy tunes pulls up with fresh fruit smoothies, neon-pink snapdragon smoothies, acai and pitaya bowls, and fruit-heaped parfaits, it's easy to make the right choice. The mixologists aboard the Rockberry Acai Bowls & Smoothies truck —known for their creative foods, designs, and street appeal— whip up smoothies with a top-secret "shaka" recipe when they're not packing berry bowls with energy-revving fruits. They also serve up a few extras, like chicken salad sliders served on Hawaiian sweet rolls. Goods are gluten free, and they happen to be as pretty and delicious as they are good for the body. As if this combo of positivity wasn't enough, Rockberry is also socially conscious, dedicated to employing community members and partnering with local charities. A dish from the truck, therefore, is good for the heart in more ways than one—plus it's easy on the eyes and tongue.

American fare with a touch of southern flair is the specialty at Rusty Pot Cafe. And the portions are just as hearty as the flavors—the aptly named Overload breakfast sandwich arrives heaped with bacon, eggs, cheese, and veggies, while chicken and waffles and juicy burgers are transported to plates via miniature forklift. Guests indulge their comfort-food cravings in the cafe's casual dining room, or out on the sun-drenched patio.

Q&A with LeAnne Schwartz, Owner

What is one of your most popular offerings? How is it prepared?
The star-anise braised pork belly bahn mi is one of our most popular sandwiches. The pork belly is slow-braised with star anise, soy, ginger, and scallions. Served on a toasted demi-baguette with house-made dau chua pickled vegetables, hoisin-peanut spread, cucumbers, mint, thai basil, and cilantro.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Our weekend brunch menu features the LA Spice benedict: Poached eggs on house-made biscuits, oven-roasted tomatoes, goat cheese, and avocado hollandaise, served with frisee and Nueske nitrate-free bacon lardons. Chef Chris DeVillier uses his Cajun Grand-Mere's recipe for the amazing buttermilk biscuits.

Other brunch specials include chicken and biscuits, pork belly and sweet potato hash, lemon ricotta pancakes, and, of course, mimosas.

In your own words, how would you describe your menu?
LA Spice is about adventurous cuisine reflecting the spirit of LA. We use fine-dining techniques and the freshest seasonal ingredients in a fun and casual atmosphere.

Step one: local farmers hand pick organic fruits and vegetables. Step two: they make their way, five pounds at a time, into Juice Crafter's 20-lb. hydraulic press. Step three: it's cold-pressed juice, and you drink it. Operating under the simple motto "live well and be well," Juice Crafters creates healthy, vitamin-rich elixirs designed to give bodies a boost. Powerhouse smoothies carry the nutrients that systems need after a workout without giving stomachs the heavy feeling associated with eating vitamin rocks. Cleanse & Detox juice programs, which last three to eight days, help evict unwanted toxins while helping bolster the immune system, among other positive effects, and made-to-order juices tickle both the taste-buds and the food pyramid.

Walking into Mickey Fine Pharmacy & Grill, one may get the sensation of having stepped into a snapshot of the past. “The Beverly Hills business lays claim to being the only remaining pharmacy in the region with a counter and soda fountain, where patrons can enjoy old-time favorites such as egg-cream sodas and hand-spun malted shakes,” says a reporter for the Los Angeles Business Journal. Perched at the original pharmacy counter, which has been serving food since 1962, customers hoist hunger-defeating burgers or freshly grilled sandwiches. Servers deliver hand-spun milk shakes and malts crafted with artisan ice cream and crowned with whipped cream like a court summons from King Candy. The aisles are still stocked with beauty and healthcare products, which customers peruse, distracted by the aromas of espresso, breakfast burritos, and housemade meatloaf.
