After immigrating to America early in the 20th century, Emilio Guglielmo saved up for years before he was able buy a plot of land for his winery in 1925. In the years since, three generations of his family have run the vineyard and kept its Old World style alive. Large wooden beams, stone walls, and terracotta tiles surround guests in the tasting room, where they can sample carefully selected vintages. Each year, the winery produces nearly 40,000 cases, including the award-winning 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and Estate Petite Sirah, each of which took home gold medals in San Francisco’s International Wine Competition.

Though in its nascence, the winery has already taken home a gold medal from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition for its 2009 sangiovese. Inside, the wood-walled tasting room invites couples to sip from crimson and amber glasses, comparing flavors, aromas, and who can spit-take the farthest. Lush lawns and low trees surround the outdoor patio, which grants views of the historic Dodge House property, a land once roamed by Native Americans, Spanish conquistadors, and horses with a nose for a good sangiovese.
Yoga, wine, and local cuisine converge at the Yoga and Zin Festival, an annual conference held at the modern Hilton Stockton hotel. Over the course of two days, attendees can discuss the art of asanas at a yoga conference, sample food and wine from more than 20 establishments, and attend a celebratory wine dinner. The event is held in September to celebrate both national yoga month and California-wine month.
Bill and Stephanie Prioste stumbled upon winemaking?literally. After finding grapes growing at the rear of their half-acre plot, their property manager suggested they try to turn them into wine. Nearing retirement, it became more than just a hobby, and their initial venture grew into what today is Windmill Ridge Winery. There, they oversee the production of an impressive selection of wines, from silky and acidic Petit Syrah to light and crisp Chardonnay.
