In 1933, the founders of Keswick Cycle opened their doors with a common goal in mind: to make each visitor feel like a part of the family. Almost 80 years later, a staff of avid cyclists and triathletes maintains the same friendly vibe at all three locations, meanwhile stocking an assortment of bikes and accessories. Bicycles from Cannondale, Specialized, Electra, and other big brands conquer myriad terrains, from roads and triathlon courses to mountain trails mucky with discarded cooking oil. Tires, apparel, and other accessories round out the inventory, situated around the shop's central hub, the services department. Here, factory-trained mechanics tune up or overhaul any type of bike or shopping carts masquerading as bikes. These same experts fit athletes for competition at the triathlon studio and, in their spare time, lend a hand to local charities.

After opening this friendly neighborhood bike shop in 2005, Freeride Sports owner Pasquale Bocchicchio quickly expanded his enterprise to include everything from motorcross to skateboarding to snowboarding, making it his mission to spread the soul-freeing, stress-abating power of extreme sports across the Haddonfield community. Tote a traditional tandem, mountain bike, or BMX cycle to pay a visit to in-house mechanic Perry Buffo who can help whip it into shape in time for summer rides or its sojourn into Italian cinema. A Basic Tune ($44.99) covers adjustments to the front and rear derailleurs and brakes, and includes a thorough safety check and bath, whereas a Basic Plus Tune ($69.99) tacks on a truing of both wheels for smoother street coasting. Cycles suffering from creaky joints benefit from a Power Tune ($99.99) where a greasing of both wheels or the stem and bottom bracket will help keep it limber and prevent steaks from sticking to its spokes. A Power Tune Plus ($149.99) sees the whole bike broken down and rebuilt into a stronger, more spry, handsomer version of itself with fresh grease applied to every pivot point. Or, take the total velocipede transformation one step further with a complete refurbishing ($199), which sees the two-wheeler sent out for repainting and returns it completely rebuilt with absolutely no memory of its former life as a CIA operative.

A place to buy your next two-wheeled transport or to get your existing one repaired, Fairmount Bicycles’ new and refurbished stock leans heavily toward commuter bikes that are perfect for Philly’s increasingly cyclist-friendly streets. Yet there’s still plenty of room in the store’s small space to fit several kinds of long-distance touring bicycles, road bikes and kids’ models as well. The young, hip, knowledgeable staff members are happy to engage customers in extended conversations and offer suggestions about accessories, from seats, locks and reflectors to sturdy cyclist’s messenger bags. The shop even rents bikes by the hour or the day, including a Surly Big Dummy with a rack and bag ready to be loaded with groceries, laundry or whatever you need to haul via pedal power from one place to another.

Wheel Wright Bike Shop's staff doesn't just outfit people with bikes–they outfit them with a lifestyle. Avid cyclists and riders themselves, the team uses a 10-point measuring and fitting system to choose the right bike for each customer. Once chosen, the bike technicians can trick them out with custom modifications in their full fabrication shop. They can also repair bent frames after bikers decide to play chicken with a car door. High-quality bike brands such as Trek and Giant line the shop's racks, alongside shelves full of accessories including helmets, lights, and riding gear.

With 15,000 square feet of floor space between its two locations, Human Zoom houses a vast selection of bikes from Trek, Cannondale, and Santa Cruz, as well as snowboards from Gnu, Roxy, and Arbor. They also stock a variety of accessories and parts such as gloves, shoes, pedals, and wheels. In the repair shop, mechanics fix broken bike spokes, adjust derailleurs, and install new handlebars so riders will have a place to put their hands while biking. The staff also performs 90-minute bike-fitting sessions, during which they interview clients and perform adjustments to optimize their ride’s performance.
