The recipe: take 5 miles of mud trails, fill them with more than 25 obstacles, add snow, and serve. The Badass Bash obstacle course is more than a race—it's a battle where competitors learn what they are made of. Across the 5-mile course, participants dash, clamber, and crawl through and over a series of obstacles inspired by firefighter, police, and military training. The favorites are back (Target Practice, Submarine Mines, and Check the Attic, among others), but there's also The Badass Bash's take on holiday cheer: Santa's Sack, Chimney Sweep, Don't Drop the Ornament, and more. But the real kicker is the snow. The event's organizers haul in a bunch of the cold white stuff, adding a chilly but festive note to the high-octane event. While adults are getting their hands dirty, kids 12 and younger can do the same on their own 0.5-mile course, the Kick Butt Kids Elf Bash. After the race, guests can mingle at the after party, which is livened up by free beer and live entertainment.

A portion of the proceeds of The Badass Bash benefits three fire, police, and veterans’ charities. All of the proceeds from the Kick Butt Kids Bash go to Caleb's Crusade, which helps children and families who are battling pediatric cancer.

During the Superhero Scramble, racers of all fitness levels tear across arduous terrain littered with body- and mind-challenging obstacles. Participants must wade through mud and, to reach the finish line, persevere through a barrage of Super Slime generously donated by retired Ghostbusters.

Upon completing the race, athletes ride their endorphin high into a party stocked with ice-cold beer. There, they can mingle with other contestants, sway to live music, and see awards doled out to the fastest runners in each age bracket. Male and female Scramble Gamble contestants compete for prizes that can cover the cost of replacing the engines in their sneakers. The benefits of the race extend beyond the Gamble winners, too?the organizers donate a portion of the proceeds to charity.

Extreme athletes banded together to design Spartan Races' intense courses orchestrated over standardized distances, each strewn with natural and man-made obstacles to test mind-body fitness, resilience, stamina, and strength, designed to leave participants exhausted and exhilarated. In waves of 200, runners collect smudges and stains as they perform box jumps, haul heavy sandbags, and juke feral linebackers. Depending on where in the world they're participating, the course may be as short as 3 miles or, for extremely practiced athletes, as long as a full marathon.

South Florida may lack for large mountain ranges, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go climbing. X-treme Rock Climbing in Miami is a full-service rock-climbing center, stocked inside its warehouse-like space with some 14,000 square feet of climbable surfaces. The routes on the walls change frequently, so guests can always have a new challenge ahead of them. Private and group classes are available at all levels, though beginners are always taken through an introductory class that teaches belaying, knot tying and basic climbing techniques. The center also includes an additional 7,000 square feet for yoga and a full-service fitness center, and daily equipment rental options mean the fitness-forward set has no excuse not to give the emerging sport a shot.

Monster: The Ultimate Obstacle Challenge's No. 1 goal is making fitness fun. Instead of just plodding toward the finish line on a concrete road, competitors tackle obstacles on the beach—climbing walls, crawling under nets, and sloshing through sandy beaches.

The race is intense and will test your inner mettle, but you don't have to be a Marine or Aqua Man to succeed. Racers of all ages and skill levels are welcome, and can opt for one of two course styles: the Monster Sprint, a quick frenzy with more than 15 obstacles back-to-back, the long 1- mile course has a combination of two courses being 2- to 3-miles long, dotted with more than 40 obstacles to test your endurance. There are two different sprint courses and two different long courses.

The organizers of Out-Fit Challenge, the first national LGBT mud run obstacle course, aim to spark new friendships between its runners by creating challenges that require not only personal perseverance, but the occasional helping hand. Obstacles such as barbed wire crawls or mud pits force racers to get dirty, and tandem climbing walls make runners rely on each other to progress.

After making it to the finish line, participants mingle with newfound friends or long-lost parents at the after-party. After showering, racers can don their finisher?s award with pride. Each participant can pick up their complementary beer from one of the bars, before mingling, dancing to live music, or chowing down on the food vendors? grub.
