From his home base at Scioto Reserve Country Club, The Powell Golf Academy's director of instruction, Brent Kalb, helps students of all ages and skill levels improve their golf skills. Each of Brent's private lessons, youth camps, and group clinics takes a step-by-step approach to instruction, allowing for the development of a dependable swing. On-course instruction helps players formulate sound mental strategy, which can include decisions on club selection and whether to attack the pin head on or sneak up on it in a camouflage jacket.
PGA instructor Paul Newman's resumé includes positions as president of the Southeast Chapter of the Southern Ohio PGA of America and President's Council member of the PGA. Elton Sargent, the outfit's club-fitting and sword-whittling specialist, has worked directly with club manufacturers and brands such as Mizuno, and has taught more than 6,000 lessons. Together they bolster ball-thwacking skills with techniques based on advanced TPI 3D motion-capture technology. The wireless system simultaneously analyzes posture, swing plane, clubface position, and favorite flavor of golf ball, communicating the results through data that are interpreted by an experienced golf instructor. Performance Golf Academies of America also utilizes The Optimal Motion Instructor (TOMI) putting-training system, which assesses putts from backstroke to follow-through and postputt pirouette.
Under the tutelage of seasoned international soccer pros and former Columbus Crew players Guillermo Barros Schelotto and Gino Padula, students attain soccer savviness in group and individual instruction covering all facets of fútbol. Open to juniors of both genders between the ages 7 and 18, the academy trains beginners in basic skills such as passing, ball control, and dribbling, before moving on to higher-level lessons in defending, positioning, moving without the ball, creating and using space, and warping space-time to take corner kicks from inside the penalty box. Newly planted skills and concepts flower into friendly, intra-academy competition, in which rising Ronaldos spar with fellow campers in games that teach the value of sound team-oriented play rather than an unhealthy fixation on the contest’s outcome and who owns the broadcasting rights. Going beyond simple drills, Schelotto & Padula's active lessons stress the importance of a positive attitude and the joy of teamwork.
The instructors at Sylvan Learning Center understand the limitations of a one-size-fits-all classroom; they tailor tutoring and enrichment curricula to each student to meet specific goals. By interviewing pupils and gathering input from teachers and parents, the center's army of energetic study buddies can position students for success in subjects such as reading, math, writing, or study skills. Along with overseeing test-prep for ACTs and SATs, instructors help kids keep school breaks productive with academic camps that focus on specific skills such as math problem-solving and pitching tiny tents out of protractors and loose-leaf paper.
Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Batman—Snapology's list of themed Lego classes reads like the ultimate sci-fi crossover. At each class, kids aged 5 and older assemble mini renditions of famous cinematic settings and fill them with Lego superheroes, wizards, or aliens. Snapology also holds other Lego-inspired engineering-inspired classes and camps for kids, from robotics—where kids create robots and incorporate working motors and sensors—to animation classes, which teach stop-motion animation.
