Clowns juggle balls, trained poodles assemble into a line, and aerial gymnasts soar on the trapeze, and that’s all before the bride cuts the cake. Wonderful World of Circus’s artists unfurl high-flying spectacles at weddings, birthday parties, and corporate events. From acrobats to tightrope walkers, their local and international performers showcase feats of derring-do at private events and shows for the general public, which combine acrobatics and dance to tell stories.
Extending a hand through the fourth wall, Wonderful World of Circus brings kids and adults into the circus to learn these skills for themselves. Trapeze bars, silks, and rings hang down from the training centre's walls. Here, colourful mats and padded floors cushion students as, guided by professional circus performers, they flip through the air like Superman MMA fighting a flock of evil geese. Back on the ground, instructors teach other skills such as juggling and break dancing. Aside from its standard classes, Wonderful World of Circus hosts birthday parties, children's camps, and school field trips at the centre.
If you recognize most of the faces on E. Fulcher Group’s website, it’s because the agency has had great success in landing its students jobs in its half a century of training actors and models. Due to its successful alumni and membership in elite talent-agent organizations, the company has been lauded with myriad accolades, including a recommendation from the International Modeling and Talent Association.
Now serving as both an agency and talent school, E. Fulcher Group hosts modelling, acting, and auditioning classes led by industry professionals who’ve had success booking top gigs. The intensive courses span up to six weeks in length, covering basic acting skills, how to be comfortable and natural on camera, and the statistically best cookies to ply casting crews with during auditions. While students are in the school’s training programs, they can audition for any of Fulcher Agency’s open-call casting sessions for commercials, films, music videos, and print ads.
Recognized as a private career college by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities, the Toronto Academy of Acting trains students of all ages in the art of film acting and production. In addition to part-time programs for adults, teens, and children, the academy features an intensive 360-hour on-camera training diploma program designed to immerse students in the world of acting. The Toronto Academy of Acting prioritizes behind-the-camera careers as well. Its 500-hour film- and television-production program leaves students with a DVD portfolio of edited music videos, documentary and narrative short films, and TV commercials that find creative ways to ask customers for 25 easy payments of $9.99.
The instructors at Freedom School of the Arts don’t teach theatrical dogma. Instead of constraining their pupils with “must do” techniques, they encourage students to explore their own process and discover on-stage confidence through a constantly changing curriculum. The school’s acting and improv classes cover basic performance skills that ease self-doubts as well as read-through, blocking, and agreement techniques that help them feel comfortable in any situation, from shows to auditions to parent-teacher conferences. Not just for adults, the school hosts youth acting classes that help kids explore their imagination and creativity.
