One of the only golf courses of its type in the Midwest, the sprawling, lake-fronted Castle Course replicates some of the game’s best-known layouts. Golfers compete against imaginary PGA rivals on meticulous reproductions of seven legendary holes, including the 13th hole at Augusta National, and the water-surrounded, Nessie-guarded 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass. You and a companion roll from dream link to dream link in an included cart, equipped with GPS to ensure foolproof navigation, and, should that fail, plenty of practice balls to act as more durable bread crumbs.

Surrounded by tall trees, the lush grasses and groomed arenas of Great Northern Riding Club look like a paradise conjured up from the imagination of Black Beauty himself. Kimberly Jo Simac, the head trainer there, has more than 25 years of equine experience under the belt of her breeches, and puts it to use during interactions with both horses and students. Each summer, trainers welcome girls for overnight camps and kids ages 7 and older for daytime lessons that culminate in a refreshing swim.

The laughter of children echoes through the dense pine forest and across the sandy beach before breaking on the lake's water like a crystal vase smashed with an inflatable hammer. Each week, new groups of kids explore Camp Lakotah's 126 acres alongside Little Hills Lake, engaging in more than 30 activities within its state-licensed and American Camp Association–accredited facilities. Campers engage in aquatic play, land-based sports, and arts-and-crafts sessions, honing both their physical fitness and creative sensibilities.

Staffers cater to each camper's needs throughout the week, guiding each individual toward activities focused on his or her personal goals and interests. The camp can serve vegetarian and diet-restriction-conscious food, and counselors can sing all campfire songs in the styles of both Bruce Springsteen and Andrea Bocelli.

Taking its name from its location along the Eau Claire River and Lake Eau Claire, EC Adventures commands a fleet of kayaks and canoes for visiting explorers. The lake bisects the river into two forks, with a different adventure waiting at each end. On the South Fork, calm waters carry paddlers north from Coon Fork County Park, offering beginners and families the chance to calmly enjoy the forested surroundings. The North Fork runs from the Lake Eau Claire Dam to Lake Altoona, where the waters hit a brisk tempo, breaking into small patches of rapids. Visitors may also enjoy the lake itself, follow a map provided for lake trips to secluded islands, sunny beaches, and patches of water frequented by indigenous fish.

Wild Boar Bar and Grill takes grilling and barbecue seriously. With a menu of smoked brisket, juicy hamburgers, and bacon-wrapped hot dogs, the grill sates any carnivore's craving. They don’t undervalue the contributions of the plant kingdom, however, and also toss fresh salads and bake personal pizzas with a wide range of toppings. Their meat-centric mentality finds its way onto signature sandwiches, such as the Sassy Sow with shredded pork and Jim Beam bourbon sauce. Adventurous diners feast on the Piggy Burger's shredded pork, which is sandwiched between two hamburgers and slices of bacon on a toasted bun.

Those same adventurous diners can also look beyond the menu for a thrill, with a mechanical bull tossing customers nightly and live music—accompanied by only mildly awkward dancing—filling the halls on the weekends. Throughout either event, a wide beer selection fuels further merrymaking.
