Parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, and genetically modified ingredients don't belong in any of the skincare products used by master aesthetician Shelley Birnbaum. Driven by a passion for eco-friendly practices, as well as a dedication to providing effective spa treatments, Shelley decided to only stock and employ balms and salves made from organically derived materials. But she wasn't content to merely vend these products—she began making them herself.

Along with her ReNew Botanicals Organic & Vegan line, Shelley draws on a handful of other trusted brands to naturally treat a wide range of skincare concerns. Her facials soothe complexions and address signs of aging with such earth-loving components as grape seed oil, olive leaf powder, and odes addressed "To That Really Nice Field." Many of her treatments are vegan, ensuring any client can stop by for a refreshing pick-me-up.

The owners of Farashé the Day Spa designed it with the feng shui elements of water, fire, metal, wood, and earth in mind. It makes for a fitting setting, since the treatments that take place there, like feng shui, draw from ancient Eastern healing philosophies. These Ayurvedic treatments range from scalp massages that stimulate the senses to applications of warm oils that separate clients from the lampposts to which they’ve frozen their foreheads. Aestheticians also perform Western spa treatments including facials with Dermalogica or GM Collin products. During body treatments, therapists draw from natural ingredients, such as mineral salts and sea mud, which clients then wash off with a massaging Vichy shower. Treatments take place amid the arched doorways and draped gold silk curtains that mark the spa’s Indian- and Moroccan-influenced decor.

At Jamachi Plastic Surgery & Medi-Spa, a diverse team of practitioners helps beautify clients from head to toenail. At the helm is plastic surgeon Dr. Emeka Onyewu, who has performed thousands of procedures—with a specialty in breast surgeries and liposuction—earning him a level of expertise that's been shared on news programs such as NBC 4. He's joined by Dr. Adaku Onukogu, a board-certified internist who administers flu shots and assists patients with managing their weight, overall health, and well-being.

Nail technicians, massage therapists, and aestheticians head up Jamachi's spa services, which are performed at mani-pedi stations or in treatment rooms. Aesthetician Trina McIntosh draws upon postgraduate training at the International Dermal Institute when revivifying faces with custom blends of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. April Parnell softens hands and feet with such specialty ingredients as champagne, olive oil, and happy unicorn tears during mani-pedis, and massage therapists Nmaku Onyewu and Joel Price lure stress out of bodies with customized techniques.

When master stylist Christie Kramer decided to open a hair salon in 1998, her standards for the hair professionals she would to hire were high. Having trained in Europe and the US, she brought with her a wide perspective on hair care and selected her staff based on their specific talents. Today, the stylists at Christie & Co. are most known for their hair coloring skills, from multi-dimensional hues to rich reds and drastic color corrections. Clients can also opt for a full array of hair care services, including Japanese straightening, extensions, and Brazilian blowouts. On the spa side of things, an aesthetician creates soothing moments during facials, massages or nail care.

Branching from a hallway adorned with hanging plants are private treatment rooms painted a soft sage green. In these tranquil nooks, aestheticians perform various facials that imbue expressions with youthful radiance and clarity. Several facials include steam cleaning, extractions, staring contests, and masks; more specialized services, such as back facials and anti-aging facials, nurture skin with products of marine origin. Massage therapists direct their attention to knots below the skin with Swedish, deep-tissue, and hot-stone massages.

Co-owner Rebeccah Bartlett Leister of Structures Salon and Spa will not trade jobs with you. "I love that every single day I am here I laugh out loud," she says on her staff bio page. "I feel so lucky to be able to enjoy my 'work' this much." One draw may be the salon and spa's proprietary organic and natural products that are crafted by a small family business. Another draw might be the encouragement staff members receive to augment the products' powers with rounds of continuing education and creative projects such as fashion shoots, makeup design, and hair-coloring experiments. Leister herself has experience designing makeup for Vanity Fair and InStyle magazines.

Wide windows illuminate Structures Salon and Spa so that stylists can mix colors in optimum light and let new hairdos photosynthesize. Colorful yarn twines around stair railings to create chromatic triangles, and appliqué birch trees stand tall along the lobby's windows.
