The problem, they say, has more to do with selection than anything else; most low-calorie sweets don?t hold a candle to a fudge brownie or a warm slice of apple pie. They kept this in mind when crafting their frozen-yogurt recipes, working tireless to develop a healthy?and equally delicious?alternative to the dessert status quo by turning to decadent confections and just-picked fruits for inspiration.
Their experiments thus far have yielded more than 60 frozen yogurt flavors, which take turns pumping through the self-serve machines that line their colorful shop?s wall. Before taking a seat in a bright orange chair, guests fill their dishes with cool, low-fat swirls of chocolate cheesecake, strawberry banana, and a classic tart that bites as pleasantly as a teething kitten. Juicy pears, crunchy granola, and gooey chocolate sauce headline a smorgasbord of at least 30 toppings ready to scooped or poured into cups before their final weigh-in.
Though LaDawn has loved baking with her mother and grandmother since childhood, Sweets By LaDawn began as an accident. After LaDawn told her coworker that her (nonexistant) recipe for Italian cream cake was better than a local restaurant's, she then quickly cobbled together a cake to bring in. Surprisingly, all of LaDawn's coworkers agreed her cake was in fact better than the restaurant's, and the orders for cakes started coming in. After relocating to Cincinnati from Baton Rouge following Hurricane Katrina, she now creates custom cakes that she sculpts into 3-D shapes, tops with printed images, or frosts to a decorative finish. She starts with a choice of cake batter in flavors such as lemon, red velvet, or spice cake. From there, she can pipe cakes with a swirl of cherry, Oreo, or chocolate bavarian cream fillings. She then frosts the entire thing in a pristine layer of cream cheese, buttercream, chocolate ganache, or molded fondant. Outside of cakes, she also crafts cookies and cupcakes. Plenty of parking is available near Sweets by LaDawn, and customers may sit in the shop's outdoor seating area to enjoy treats from inside.
Jojo’s Cupcakes’ creative treats aim to expand the bounds of dessert possibility, challenging assumptions about whether pearls are edible and how many times you can fit “chocolate chip cookie” into one sentence. To wit: Florence’s french vanilla cupcake comes piled with vanilla frosting and sprinkled with edible pearl gems; the chocolate chip cookie dough cupcake tops chocolate chip cookie dough cake with frosting of the same flavor and a full-size chocolate chip cookie. For weddings and other occasions, the culinary team also arranges their cupcakes—which come in more than 20 flavors—into the shape of a tiered cake or other custom configurations. Jojo’s desserts aren’t only for special events: back in the inviting bake shop, the staff pairs treats with gourmet flavored coffees, tea, and cocoa for guests’ enjoyment at tables or to take home.

These tasty ingredients are just a sampling of what goes into the fudge that the shop's owners make from scratch. In order to satisfy different customers' cravings, they make batches in a wide variety of flavors.
