A hair dresser for over 20 years, Allison Baham began her career in New Orleans before settling in Texas. At Salons of Volterra, she creates new looks for clients with haircuts, styling, and highlights, using Schwarzkotf color products that leave hair feeling healthy and strong. The treatments are all administered from the comfort of a salon that overlooks a serene Tuscan-style courtyard complete with a four-tiered fountain.
Tell us about your business.
I started working full time as a hairdresser in 1996, love what I do for a living, and enjoy making my clients feel special when they are in my salon. I was born and raised in the UK and try to travel back "home" as often as I can to see family and friends and also catch up on the latest hair designs and techniques, which will work their way over to the states. Continuing education is always a must. I was able to work in a salon last year in the UK for several days, which I found fun. I also have been told I have a dry humor.
Do you offer your customers any extra perks?
We have magazines and can always offer clients a cup of coffee.
When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?
I started coloring my mother's hair when I was 8 years old, and I guess hairdressing started to develop from there. When I was a student at Oxford, I was always cutting everyone's hair, and this continued after I returned to Texas. I have always had a passion for hair and how it looks, feels, and what suits a person's face and personality. One day, I just signed up for beauty school and got my license and have enjoyed what I do for a living.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a client?
When they can't keep their hands out of their hair after I have finished, and the big smile they give me when I am done. It's also nice when they refer me to their friends and family.

Olivia Hill fits in well at The Hair Junkies, as she's a hair junkie herself. Whether she's a style junkie, color junkie, or reconstructive junkie, however, depends on what services her client wants. But regardless of her client's requests or hair texture, Olivia makes sure to start with a healthy scalp and head of hair by pampering craniums with scalp treatments and nourishing dry strands with conditioners and protein treatments. Then, she may coat locks in an ombre color or style hair into two-strand twists. She can also snip strands to the client's desired length, smooth hair with a relaxer, or add length with a sew-in weave. Olivia is a nail junkie and lash junkie, too. She offers soothing mani-pedis and applies eyelash strips to existing fringe for added drama to the eyes.
The stylists at Fantastic Sams keep things simple?but that doesn't mean plain. At salons scattered across the US, the mane-makers fill a head of hair's everyday needs with services such as adult cuts, bang trims, and facial styling. They also go beyond basic services with texturing treatments, foil highlights, and hair relaxers more effective than simply slipping some gin into the shampoo. All services are complemented with their trademark FantasticStyle shampoo therapy, a treatment that includes a three-minute scalp massage and a nourishing argan-oil serum.
Goldwell, Renokin, and formaldehyde-free CHI products help Nicki—a hair-industry veteran with 30 years of experience—keep locks in tip-top shape. She uses the products when coloring hair, smoothing away frizz, or adding volume to limp strands. The multitalented stylist also cleans up countenances with facials and makeup applications. Bowls of warm wax, 100% cotton threads, and flypaper serve as means to remove unwanted hair on the face and body.
Hairstylist Ann Nguyen knows her way around a salon station. She handles basic services such as cuts, conditioning, and coloring as well as more complicated services such as perms and keratin treatments. To beautify the hair that gets lost on its way to the scalp and grows out of the eyelid, she also offers eyelash extensions.
