The confidence of A 2 Z Hair Studio's staff of hairstylists, nail technicians, and aestheticians puts clients at ease as soon as they enter the day spa. In addition to routinely seeking out techniques and mastering new trends, the team members employ professional-grade products in their everyday treatments. These lines include everything from Moroccanoil and Goldwell hair-conditioning balms to Shellac and OPI nail polishes. Equipped with high-end shampoos and conditioners, the stylists can recreate a classical look or devise a more modern hairdo by incorporating asymmetry or holographic bangs. Beyond hairdos, the staff can also pamper its clients with indulgent mani-pedis, body treatments, and facials that rejuvenate skin tone using 24-karat gold, Vitamin C-rich salves, or a customized selection of skincare products.

The nugget of inspiration that sparked Photo In a Box occurred when one of the founders wanted a photo booth for his own wedding, but wouldn’t settle for inferior service or unrealistic prices. The two founders—who are also best friends—went with the obvious solution: start their own photo-booth company. Now they service DC, Northern Virginia, Maryland, and other more remote locales, toting along professional photo booths to events such as weddings, birthdays, or pre-New Year's Eve parties in July. Some of the booths snap high-resolution shots printed on classic photo-booth strips, while some come equipped with video and social media–integration capabilities. A prop box holds fun toys and costumes such as boas, tiaras, and oversized glasses, and Photo In a Box can customize each booth experience according to the occasion with personalized strip borders and props.

This Groupon saws the price of a magic show ticket in slightly more than half—magically, without breaking the skin, harming the vital organs, or causing paper-blood. See Glenn Gary's Parlor Magic, a spectacular evening of "cabaret magic," an intimate, close-up type of abracadabra performed for small crowds with audience participation (shows are limited to 40 guests). Magic is used to delight the young and young at heart with a humorously narrated card trick. Magick is used to keep that blowhard Erasmus Stodgewell from acquiring the Orb of Osiris.

Since 1981, the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC, has aimed to provide a gathering place for gay people and educate the public about their community through the arts. Since then, the award-winning choir—which rings with the voices of nearly 300 members—has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Theatre, and the Obama inaugural celebration, as well as at venues throughout the world. Their upbeat productions also have been the soundtrack at community events for the Whitman-Walker Clinic and PFLAG.

Named one of Parents magazine's Top 10 Birthday Chains in 2010, Color Me Mine's international franchise of DIY ceramics studios cater to an older crowd as well. Hundreds of unadorned ceramic pieces?including vases, flatware, and busts of Elvis?await the attentions of muses of kids and their keepers alike, as do glazes in earthy tones and bright crimsons to frighten bulls away from china cabinets. Guests follow simple step-by-step instructions that leave plenty of room for creative expression. When painters are satisfied with their work, the professional kiln-workers help glaze and fire it for them before customers retrieve the finished piece a few days later.
