We were tired of the big box gyms! We want to service our members and give them what they desire, not cater to the corporate model.
What do you love most about your job?
I love teaching people that want to be taught! When that light goes off in a client's head, we celebrate together. Fitness should involve body AND mind!

In 2005, Sili Kalepo and a friend started working out in an old warehouse; it was their solution to the complete lack of neighborhood gyms in Rainier Beach. Fortunately, the space suited their style of exercise pretty well, their programs caught on, and they started a gym. They became part of the non-profit Urban Impact, striving to promote healthier lifestyles in the community. Time treated them well, and in 2013 they relocated to a brand new facility on the ground floor of the Emerald City Commons, with their CrossFit program taking over the space next door.
These days, workouts incorporate a variety of agility, strength, and endurance training techniques. The routines can get pretty intense, but the trainers are on-hand to monitor maneuvers and ensure participants stay healthy. "We believe that all people have a threshold that is safe for their bodies to handle," says the CrossFit trainer. "All workouts can be modified to your intensity level and ability."
Massive Monkees are "Seattle heroes" and "one of the most famous breaking crews in the world." But don't just take the Seattle Times' word for it. The crew earned their bona fides on MTV's America's Best Dance Crew, coming in third place overall. They've also popped, locked, and deadbolted their limbs on stage with the likes of Jay-Z, Public Enemy, and 50 Cent, and their trophy case sports first-place prizes from Denmark, the UK, Japan, France, and Korea. The crew has been honored here at home, too; in 2004, Seattle mayor Greg Nickels dubbed April 26 "Massive Monkees Day."
Not content to hoard their skills, the Massive Monkees crew spearheads outreach and educational efforts in Seattle, teaching public classes and mentoring young people. Most of these programs take place at Massive Monkees' studio, The Beacon. Part of Storefronts Seattle's Creative Enterprise Program, The Beacon is a temporary facility. But with community support, it will become a permanent home for all-ages dance classes, a free after-school program, and special events—all guided by a vision of hip-hop and the arts as positive forces. During classes, dancers of all skill levels learn freezes and toprocks or get their hearts pumping with Zumba, funk dancing, and hip-hop/jazz fusion choreography.
Every human body may be unique, but the basic patterns of our muscles and skeletons are almost universal. The fitness science of CrossFit relies on that uniformity in each of its exercises, which are designed to help bodies function better in ten different domains of fitness.
