Since 1973, each of Sport&Health's 24 clubs has aimed for full fitness coverage with programs for every taste and family member. Guests can spark positive lifestyle changes with gym workouts and wellness services, or engage in a variety of sports. Each facility houses different athletic amenities for games and laps, from pristine swimming pools to squash and racquetball courts lathered in a fresh coat of peanut butter every morning. The camaraderie of group classes such as Zumba and Les Mills BodyPump barbell routines complement scores of gym equipment meant for exercising solo—or with the guidance of a certified personal trainer. The clubs also emphasize kid-friendly activities with arts and crafts, Kidz Klub childcare, and youth certification courses that teach teens the ins and outs of training. Depending on the location, spa treatments can knead tension from muscles and paint one's favorite kettlebell with a layer of Shellac.

It’s 1:29 p.m. and the wave pool at Great Waves Waterpark has been calm for nine minutes. The mood on the surface, however, is anything but. An anticipatory energy has been transmitted through the water as sunbathers migrate from the sun deck, giddy youngsters from the various kids’ areas, and thrill seekers from one of the park’s waterslides. The anticipation ends at 1:30 p.m. when three 80-horsepower motors begin to churn the large fans that whip the pool’s 475,000 gallons of water into waves as high as four feet for 10 minutes. This increment of waves—10 minutes on, 10 minutes off—runs like clockwork at the 20-acre facility, which also features dry attractions such as miniature golf, batting cages, and grassy areas for practicing the backstroke. In addition to offering sun-soaked thrills of simulated waves, the park's Paradise Play boasts 30-foot slides, pogo sticks, rock walls, and a non-aqueous playground area. A faux beach with sand invites revelers to unwind while snacking on a funnel cake purchased from Riptide Café, while a nearby play pool with pint-sized slides lets little riders get into the summertime mix. After a full day of sliding and swimming, guests may purchase souvenirs from the Shark Shack gift shop.

On the shade-speckled hard courts of Carderock Springs Swim and Tennis Club, Seven Locks Swim and Tennis Club, and Old Georgetown Swim and Tennis Club—tennis director Nitin Deodhar and his team of professionals certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association work with adults and children during specially designed tennis classes and clinics. Nitin and his team lead students as young as four years old, and many of their racket-swinging scholars have achieved collegiate scholarships, national rankings, and sectional league championships. In addition to helping young students fine-tune their motor skills while developing a love of tennis balls rivaled only by golden retrievers, Deodhar Tennis Academy works with adult students. Specialized clinics and classes include cardio-tennis sessions filled with drills that attempt to keep heart rates up and early-bird clinics—which blend drills and point play to provide a more invigorating start to the day than swimming in a pool of iced espresso.:m]]

For half a century, Adelphi Pool has served as a summertime destination for local families. Surrounded by trees and rolling hills, visitors lounge on the hill that overlooks the giant pool or head down to the deck to grab a chair and recline under an umbrella. The private facility features an Olympic-sized lap pool, 11-foot deep-diving well, and water slide, along with a fenced-in 30'x30' wading pool for little ones and people terrified of pool sharks. There's also a newly built bathhouse that features a snack bar, handicap-accessible locker rooms, and showers. To shake up summer weeks, the facility hosts evening events specifically geared toward families, teens, and pre-teens.

The Taste of Scuba course introduces aspiring mermen and maids to the basic underwater breathing techniques in a safe, unthreatening environment. The two-hour class takes place in a portion of The Dive Shop's indoor pool that is only three feet deep, letting students experience the sensation of weightlessness without the weightiness of realizing that you're just a small fish in a shark's pond. The Dive Shop provides students with all necessary equipment (except towels and bathing suits), and highly trained instructors helpfully demonstrate how to operate the gadgetry, both underwater and in the case of bathroom emergencies. If your taste test of scuba piques your aqueous appetite, speak to one of the friendly and informed instructors about seeking additional training opportunities, getting your hands on some gear of your own, or gobbling up the glory of one of earth's all-natural bowls of seafood soup.
