The volunteers at Deutsches Haus have worked since 1928 to celebrate German culture and introduce locals to the country’s music, food, language, and history. The chirp of accordions and the crackle of bratwurst on a grill hint at events, including Oktoberfest and Volksfest festivals. Beers from German breweries such as Paulaner and Warsteiner run in straw-hued rivulets from mugs, and vendors dressed in dirndls and lederhosen sell traditional steins. During weekly meetings of the Schlaraffia, a jovial, international fraternity, guests belt out literary and humorous compositions to entertain one another or try to teach robots to laughs.
Mattress Direct culls a variety of mattresses in textures ranging from firm to plush from brands such as Tempur-Pedic and Serta. Serta's iComfort, for example, evenly distributes support across the body with microsupport gel capsules nestled in its memory foam; a specialized material prevents overheating and the resulting unpleasant lava-chase nightmares. Mattress Direct's stock of bed frames, bed linens, and pillows allow patrons to assemble complete bedroom sets in one trip, and an express delivery service prevents the hassle of renting a moving truck or outfitting each leg of a new bed with a rollerblade.
Rembrandt All You Can Art is a fun, relaxing studio aimed at translating the joy of painting for artists of all skill levels. Proficient portraitists who have already nailed the fresco fundamentals will want to take advantage of the one-month paint-lab membership, allowing open studio time to suit hectic schedules (normally 1 p.m.–9 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 1 p.m.–5 p.m. on Sunday). Rembrandt provides paint, brushes, and easel, but not the price of a canvas, which can be purchased blank ($5) or with a pre-sketched design ($7) for painters who would rather focus on brushstrokes and color theory than compositional skills. Instructors are on hand to assist artists whenever needed, but painters are welcome to bring their own instructional materials, be it Bob Ross's The Best of the Joy of Painting or the ghost of Salvador Dali's moustache. Paint-lab hours are subject to change, so be sure to call ahead and check the current schedule.
