  • Angelo Dundee’s 5th Street Gym
The Gym in the 1950s 5th St. Gym's beginning has a mythical quality?partially because back in 1950, when it was first founded, clients referred to the place as "Oz." Logically, they also dubbed founder and boxing trainer Chris Dundee "the Wizard of Oz." Both nicknames fit. Dundee trained clients alongside his brother, Angelo, and their ability to impart boxing skills bordered on magic. They were so talented, they caught the eye of clients like Mohammed Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. The Gym Today You can tell things have changed at 5th St. Gym from its location alone. It's no longer on 5th Street. A CVS occupies its old site, and the gym reopened on Alton Road in 2009, then moved to Washington Ave in 2013. As its unchanged name suggests, however, the Dundees' legacy lives on at the gym. The brothers no longer train clients, but Angelo's protege Dino Spencer does, using similarly wizardly techniques in one-on-one sessions and cardio boxing classes. His handiwork still attracts stars, too, like boxer Bernard Hopkins and Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima.

  • INDP
International Night and Day Protection (INDP) wants to help keep you and your loved ones safe, so it offers myriad protection and security classes. The instructors teach self-defense, boxing, and Street Combat classes, which arm students with the techniques to protect themselves from assailants, while simultaneously whipping them into shape. For those entering careers in the security industry, they also lead armed and unarmed bodyguard and security classes, providing students the skills to keep others safe as well. They also lead a lineup of purely fitness-oriented classes, including boot camp, CrossFit, and yoga, and offer personal-training sessions. To help clients unwind after a tough workout, INDP keeps a massage therapist on staff, who works to de-stress bodies and relax minds, which can stop The Bodyguard soundtrack from playing over and over in your head.

  • Sobekick
At Sobekick, a boutique boxing studio, wrapped-knuckle students wallop a partner’s punch pads, pummel punching bags, or high-kick invisible targets. Despite all of the aggression in the air, the atmosphere remains friendly as professional fighters and certified trainers help exercisers of all skill levels achieve their fitness goals. To do this, they use personal-training sessions, kickboxing routines, and "wildcard" workouts that could consist of hardcore cardio drills or sincere apologies to bruised punching bags. Sobekick slows things down with yoga classes and tones bodies with specialized classes designed to tighten abs and derrieres.

  • BluePrint Training
Jorge Perez is on a covert mission. At least, that's how he has constructed BluePrint Training SoBe, Inc.'s mission statement, which makes a great claim in the form of fine print: "If you have a pulse, you are an athlete." Jorge and his team of expert coaches act on this assertion by leading all-inclusive, high-intensity workouts that scale to each student's current fitness level and ultimate goals, whether they want to shed a few pounds, develop defined six-pack abs, or shatter an enemy's windshield with a single penny. The team's CrossFit and boot-camp regimens both involve an ever-mutating series of exercises designed to hone the body's performance in ten domains of fitness. CrossFit classes can include heavy lifting, whereas boot-camp sessions focus on unpredictable cardio work with lighter free weights.
