The Gym in the 1950s
5th St. Gym's beginning has a mythical quality?partially because back in 1950, when it was first founded, clients referred to the place as "Oz." Logically, they also dubbed founder and boxing trainer Chris Dundee "the Wizard of Oz." Both nicknames fit. Dundee trained clients alongside his brother, Angelo, and their ability to impart boxing skills bordered on magic. They were so talented, they caught the eye of clients like Mohammed Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard.
The Gym Today
You can tell things have changed at 5th St. Gym from its location alone. It's no longer on 5th Street.
A CVS occupies its old site, and the gym reopened on Alton Road in 2009, then moved to Washington Ave in 2013. As its unchanged name suggests, however, the Dundees' legacy lives on at the gym. The brothers no longer train clients, but Angelo's protege Dino Spencer does, using similarly wizardly techniques in one-on-one sessions and cardio boxing classes. His handiwork still attracts stars, too, like boxer Bernard Hopkins and Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima.
