As the local outreach arm of the Sierra Club Foundation, Inner City Outings Miami takes youth locked in urban surroundings on excursions into the pristine peace and exciting adventures of a natural environment. Youth aged 8–18 engage in 25–30 day trips every year, which include orienteering, hiking, snorkeling, and canoeing workshops and service projects such as tree planting and beach cleanups. On the trips, young people also learn about natural science, animal ecology, and protecting the environment. Inner City Outings Miami plans trips to locations within a few hours of the city, such as Everglades National Park, the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, and the Koreshan State Historic Site.
Founded in 1999, Just The Funny Theater hosts a rotating roster of improv and sketch teams, and also opens its stage to standup comedians. The theater’s comedic cast members have numerous credits from local theater productions. Just The Funny also offers classes in the improvisational arts and sketch writing, during which instructors dispense the comedic skills they’ve learned from their own training with such groups as The Second City, Upright Citizens Brigade, and The Groundlings.
CrossFit is “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement” that uses fitness techniques such as squatting, lifting, and running in combination with kettlebells, medicine balls, and cardio to rapidly tone up muscles. The skilled CrossFit trainers encourage small-group classes to constantly push their limits in each high-intensity, 45-minute class.
Per its name, the Taste of Cuba Festival shines a spotlight on traditional Cuban food—potato-like yucca, rice and beans, and lechon asada, or shredded roast pork. Ice-cold mojitos complement these classic dishes, along with café con leche and authentic cigars rolled by hand, unlike the newfangled ones that roll themselves if left at the top of a hill. The festival delights senses beyond taste, too; revelers can dance to live music or feast their eyes on Cuban artwork.
Europe and Latin America do not share a border on most reputable maps, but for more than 15 years, they have converged at The Globe in the middle of Coral Gables. There, chef de cuisine Martin Taylor and sous chef Jacques Blacques make room on their menu for New England fish and chips and Argentinean churrasco, as well as pastas and hand-tossed pizzas. Throughout the day, alert noses might detect aromas of spanish chorizo, wasabi, and cognac-spiced dijon sauce suffusing the pub.
That eclectic edible geography is reflected in the décor. Vintage globes line the shelf above the polished wood bar, and mollify diners who refuse to accept the existence of a new Zealand. A curved staircase with a wrought-iron railing—reminiscent of a Mediterranean villa—provides a similar centerpiece to the bistro tables spread across the weathered wood floors. Resident musical director Rodolfo Zuniga adds to the atmosphere with live American and Latin jazz performances, which fill the restaurant with guitar licks and twinkling piano late into the night. Miami.com has praised the "great selection of rare wines." Likewise, the Miami New Times describes The Globe as "an ideal place to meet for happy hour."
