As an 11-year-old girl, Doctor of Chiropractic Wendy Gallego was diagnosed with scoliosis. The painful curvature in her spine immediately began to interfere with her life, forcing her to drop out of gymnastics and wear a back brace. After years of chronic discomfort, a college friend suggested that she visit a chiropractor, and she finally began to find relief from her symptoms. More importantly, she was inspired by her chiropractor's whole-body approach to wellness, which emphasized nutrition and lifestyle as well as treatment. This drove her to become a chiropractor herself while formulating the philosophy that "people should not be perceived as separately functioning parts, but rather as a complex structure of interdependent systems." By founding Shin Wellness, she sought to create a holistic health care center that addressed physical as well as mental health.

Embracing Western and Eastern treatment modalities, Dr. Gallego looks for instructors and therapists with more than technical proficiency and a photographic recollection of the periodic table. She claims that "there's a quality that comes with being a healer," and she looks for that passion in all her prospective employees, whether they will be performing massages, conducting hypnotherapy sessions, or leading Pilates classes.

Dr. Alexis Bergan-Guzman believes that alternative medicine can treat health issues ranging from basic stress to terminal illnesses. Her diverse background, including a master's in medical science and certifications in massage therapy and holistic bodywork, guide her staff in performing a range of health and wellness treatments. Chiropractic adjustments return joints throughout the body to their full range of movement so that heads can once again rotate 360 degrees. Massage modalities range from reflexology and hot-stone massage to the energy work of reiki. Acupuncturists insert slender needles 1/5 the width of standard medical needles into specific points across the body to relax and stimulate physical systems. Nutritional counselors help clients customize diet plans or interpret recurring dreams of asparagus.

Stretch Zone mixes up humdrum fitness regimes with a new type of workout, one that can enhance physical performance, muscle symmetry, and flexibility. It consists of table stretching—but not the kind that you're probably familiar with. By working with the autonomic nervous system, Stretch Zone practitioners take muscle extension to a whole new level. Atop their specially designed tables, comfortable straps systematically position, stabilize, and isolate the parts of the body that are not being stretched. This allows the stretched muscle—and the person on the table—to completely relax, extending further than the central nervous system would normally permit. Besides helping rejuvenate and invigorate the whole body, the sessions can also alleviate rheumatic pain for everyone from seniors to adults.

You are stopped at a red light, and although your foot is pressing the brake to the floor, you feel the car jolt ahead. The force pushes your body forward, causing the seat belt to lock and your head to lash forward and back. Later, after listening to the other driver's apology and filling out the police report, you are left ailing with a stiff, sore neck.

At Miami Health Clinic, board-certified Doctor of Chiropractic Jared Rose and his staff specialize in treating patients who have been in a car accident. Their pain-alleviating techniques include everything from chiropractic adjustments and electro-stimulation to ultrasound therapy and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, which is a resistive stretching technique. Their services aren't reserved for only injuries sustained in a car, but also those suffered while working or having a nightmare about working.
