When singer Will Smith penned a song about Miami, he focused more on the happening nightlife than on the city's amazing outdoor activities. But, with miles of shoreline, outdoor Miami concerts, hiking trails in the parks and a biking path, the city is a haven for anyone who loves the great outdoors. Here, anyone has an excuse to have fun outside and get a tan at the same time.
Miami's high temperature and humidity give it a steamy jungle feel, and two local attractions take advantage of that jungle atmosphere: Jungle Island and Monkey Jungle. Jungle Island sits on an actual island in the middle of Biscayne Bay. The original owner built long trails that pass through the natural landscape of the island. Visitors can walk along the paths, check out the birds on display, see a live animal show featuring lions and check out a petting zoo. Monkey Island seems almost tame when compared to Jungle Island, but this is a zoological park built to study monkeys. Visitors can view the monkeys and other primates from inside large cages, which allows the monkeys more freedom in the park.
Those feeling more adventurous can take in the views at some of the top Miami parks, including Oleta River State Park. With biking trails, hiking trails, camping, boating, fishing and swimming, it's a retreat from life in the big city. There are even rental shops where park guests can rent non-motorized boats to take onto the water. For those who are even more adventurous, Everglades Hummer Adventures is a great place to go. The shop offers tours of the Everglades from inside a heavy-duty Hummer. Those interested, can arrange for a pickup from several locations in the city.
Then there's the 12th Street Beach, which offers an adult atmosphere, as guests there are allowed to be topless. Although it's not appropriate for children or families, couples and singles can have fun people watching, swimming and enjoying the sun. Whether it's one of the outdoor Miami concerts, a hot beach or a fun day out with the family, Miami does not disappoint.
