Vegan quinoa and apple salads, tuna with olive tapenade and tomato sandwiches, and mango-basil smoothies. These are only a few of the healthy options you can get at Pete's Authentic Cooking. The restaurant prepares a whole menu of nutritious meals using fresh produce and wholesome ingredients. Pete's homemade jams top a number of the breakfast toasts and sandwiches, adding a sweet fruit flavor to brioche or roast beef. You can get these tantalizing tastes in the store for breakfast or lunch or delivered across Coral Gables.

Chef Willy Hernandez is an international man through and through—and the evidence can be tasted at Zielo Restaurant. His Dominican Republic heritage presents itself in the Caribbean-steeped trio ceviche, with shrimp, whitefish, and coconut-ginger tuna, or the ahi tuna tartare, served over a plantain nest. But influences from Asia, Italy, and France weave their way into the dinner entrees, resulting in such dishes as truffle-infused risotto. And the time Chef Hernandez spent in New York while training in the William's Culinary Institute also gets some face time with the cowboy ribeye and rack of lamb dressed in mustard sauce.

Guests pair this culinary voyage with sips of wines curated by general manager Ervin Machado, a sommelier and wine judge. The deep red of a Louis Martini cabernet sauvignon or Charles Krug pinot noir pops amid the predominantly ivory color scheme, joining the russet tones of the leather-bound volumes upon backlit bookshelves. Calculated swathes of cobalt add another dimension throughout the restaurant, resurfacing on water glasses, lampshades, the front of the bar, and the faces of those competing in breath-holding competitions.

You're immersed in the lively flavors and atmosphere of Mexico the minute you walk into Frida Mexican Restaurant. The bright pink walls?adorned with a painting of Frida Kahlo herself?mirror the spicy ingredients chefs use to season succulent cuts of carnitas, spit-roasted al pastor pork, and savory fish tacos. Chefs layer these meats atop tortillas for the house tacos, as well as on slices of fried masa huarache to create a hearty dish similar to a flatbread. For drinks, however, staff veer away from these spicy flavors in favor of cooling glasses of beer, thirst-quenching bottles of Jarritos, and beer cocktails. These can incorporate anything from a splash of lime juice and salt to a blend of hot sauces and shrimp reminiscent of a bloody mary.

With the deft hands of a veteran baker, Vincent Benoliel keenly measures almonds, eggs, and sugar, because accuracy is essential when making macarons. The ephemeral sweets come in a rainbow of colors and might taste of chocolate, rose petal, or lemon, but every single one has that je ne sais quoi of a macaron made by a native Frenchman. Vincent grew up in France's ubiquitous restaurant industry, ascending to the rank of sous chef in a Parisian brasserie when he was only 18. In 2005, he brought the richness of French cuisine to South Florida by importing the Eiffel Tower in 3-pound chunks and by opening Le Boudoir in Miami. His handiwork includes delicacies such as escargot, steak tartare, and fresh pastries.

Despite being separated from the Mediterranean by an entire ocean, 345 Caffe Italiano manages to bring an authentic taste of Italy to southern Florida. Its chefs embrace tradition by importing specialty meats and cheeses directly from the Old World, and pair these distinctive flavors with locally sourced produce to better capture the inherent freshness of true Italian bistro cooking. This is most evident in the eatery's panini sandwiches, which can feature everything from bresaola della valtellina (cured beef) and Italian goat cheese to grilled eggplant and basil between two pieces of gently crisped bread. As a sweet counterpoint to the savory panini, the cafe also offers a variety of sweet and savory crepes, classic espresso drinks, and gelato that is made fresh daily using shavings from Italy's famous icebergs.

Like the red cape of a matador attracts a bull, the bright-red awning at 1401 Argentinean Bistro beckons to diners. Once lured inside, guests find plates piled high with "Argentinean dishes mixed with Italian inspiration," as noted by the Miami New Times. Patrons relax in the casual eatery as they nosh on housemade pastas, slow-cooked sauces, and that most sacred Argentinean meal: grilled meats. Dinner service gets an extra surge of energy on Thursday and Friday nights, when live music fills the room from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
