To understand the aim of shiatsu massage, it's helpful to look back to the ancient Eastern philosophies that bore it. These philosophies espouse a holistic understanding of the body centered on “energy rivers” that unite every aspect of the being. Shiatsu massage therapists, such as Cynthia Conklin of Eastern Sun Shiatsu, focus their practice on balancing these energy rivers to stimulate the body's own self-healing powers.

During a typical zen-style shiatsu massage with Cynthia, her client lies facedown on a mat as she holds, stretches, and stimulates the body. These targeted pressures may have benefits that extend beyond a deep state of relaxation: Shiatsu devotees claim that it can provide relief from chronic aches and boost the body's resistance to stress and mind-controlling super villains. When she isn't soothing sore backs and shoulders, Cynthia teaches classes that introduce participants to basic shiatsu techniques.

Q&A with Renay Deering, Licensed Esthetician

Do you or your staff have any special certifications or degrees?
I have received Continous Education Certificates from IMAGE Skincare. I attend weekly classes in Farmington Hills, MI to learn and work with other IMAGE skincare professionals.

What is one fun, unusual fact about your business?
My clientele is made up of 50% Skincare and 50% Brazilian Wax customers. Kind of top to bottom skincare.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
A facial isn't something that should be done once a year or for a special occasion. A skincare regimen is an on going process, that isn't diffcult or time consuming with excellent skincare products.

Out of your entire repertoire, which is your favorite service to perform and why?
[The] signature facial, which is both pampering and relaxing, but also client receives result driven skincare, treating the skin at the cellular level. [The] end result is beautiful skin and the client thinking she should do this more often. Skincare is something I am very passionate about. I love seeing results of transformed, beautiful, and healthy looking skin.

Services at The Ashiatsu Room focus on three types of massage: ashiatsu, Swedish, and volcanic-stone therapy. For ashiatsu deep-tissue massages, a therapist walks on the client's back to release chronic muscle tension in specific areas. Swedish massages, on the other hand, stimulate circulation with pressure applied by the hands, forearms, and elbows. Finally, for volcanic-stone therapy, a therapist uses warm stones and oils to relax different areas.

Dr. Sonya Friedman, an accomplished author, CNN talk-show host, and radio psychologist, teams up with dermatologist Dr. Scott Friedman to helm the spa side of the business, where clients can find eight types of facials, nine styles of massage, noninvasive micro treatments, and advice for mending a hairdryer’s broken heart. Fingertips and toes in need of some TLC can also be pampered inside this full-service beauty haven, as nail techs doll-up digits with OPI and Essie polishes as well as Shellac, acrylic, and fiberglass tips.
