Do you agree with the phrase "beauty is on the inside?" Why or why not?
I do. It goes along with the saying, "Don't judge a book its cover." We do it all the time, whether we notice it or not. My best friend almost wasn't my friend at all because I had decided that because she was so beautiful on the outside, there was no way she was beautiful on the inside. As it turns out, she is one of the most caring and loving people I know. There are all kinds of people out there. If we don't take the time to know them, then we have failed not only ourselves, but our future generations.
What's the most common beauty mistake you see people make? What would you recommend they do instead?
It's the fact that some people don't wash their faces or they use regular body soap to do it. Being a massage therapist, I take care of the body and soul. Being a Mary Kay consultant, I take care of skin. The skin on your face is more delicate and has a different reaction to what you use on your body. You need something that is formulated for your face to take care of any problems that you might have.
What is the best reaction you?ve ever gotten from a client?
When they told me that I made them feel human again. It broke my heart that they had experienced so much pain during their recovery and then after. Their doctors couldn't find a way to relieve their pain, but I did. It made my day to see a big smile on their face.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
I love to talk and to get to know new people. So if you come in for a treatment and would like peace and quiet, just let me know before hand. My goal is to help you relieve stress, not to cause more of it.
Like the sun, Unique Mills visits the East and West each day, but not by rising and setting. Instead, her fingers channel therapeutic strokes from around the globe to melt pent-up tension and stress. At her eponymous studio, Unique Massage, she makes bodies work like new with techniques honed at The Swedish Institute of Health Sciences. Filled with rolling, kneading, and tapping motions, her calming Swedish massages can dissolve scar tissue, reduce swelling, and send secret recipes to pastry chefs via Morse code. During Japanese shiatsu, her fingers, palms, and elbows liberate blocked energy and stimulate circulation by pressing the body’s acupuncture points. Unique brushes the skin with olive oil and herbs before Chinese gua sha, then scrapes it with a clean, flat tool to oust toxins and promote lymph flow. In addition to easing the aches of pregnancy, scoliosis, and fibromyalgia, she enjoys helping athletes, dancers, and actors loosen up before important performances.

Luba Ayrapetyan isn't just making small talk when she asks her clients what they ate for dinner last night. Rather, she's gathering personal information to build customized skincare plans that help combat her clients’ specific issues, whether it’s acne, dehydration, or the signs of aging. With this information in hand, she doles out facials, chemical peels, and pampering massages that seek to polish the appearance and revive the body, much like a trip through a bowling ball–return mechanism.
In more than a decade of experience as an aesthetician in both Russia and Detroit, Luba’s constant search for effective skincare regimens has materialized in the addition of a new technology to her practice. For many treatments, she now incorporates TriActive LaserDermology, which helps massage cellulite and lax skin into toned submission.
The aestheticians at Beauty & Bodyworks Day Spa reach for organic, vegan, and fruit-based products when performing beautifying treatments, avoiding additives at all costs. For facials they use Hungarian herbal blends from ilike Organic Skin Care, as well as Michigan-made serums from Eve Organics. All three of the spa’s therapists graduated from Irene's Myomassology Institute in Southfield, where they learned an array of bodywork modalities, holistic practices, and not to use a curling iron in the shower. At their studio, they soothe clients' muscles with relaxation, hot-stone, and couples massage.
