CKO Kickboxing founder Joseph Andreula's knowledge of exercise goes beyond creating effective workouts. It also helps guide the Fitness Standards Council, a nonprofit advisory panel of doctors and certified personal trainers, and provides the basis for the articles he’s published in Exercise for Men, Men's Health, and _Men's Fitness Magazine. But his true passion lies in the innovative fitness classes he created at CKO Kickboxing gyms. Since 1997, these gyms have housed Andreula’s exercise classes, which use basic kickboxing techniques to lead students toward powerful strength and greater endurance. In contrast to other kickboxing routines that have participants kick the air or invisible schoolyard bullies, students in CKO Kickboxing sessions strike hanging heavy bags to help them tone more muscle and burn up to 1,200 calories in a single class.

With locations spanning the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, iLoveKickboxing.com has trimmed the waistlines of thousands of members while bolstering their confidence levels with engaging and varied total-body workouts. The program blends kickboxing techniques into a fat-burning, muscle-toning, and endurance-enhancing regimen. Limbs warm up with a quick jog before taking down imaginary opponents with a set of practice kicks and punches to drive home proper technique. The pummeling then switches to the one of many freestanding heavy bags, and incorporates ducking and weaving to boost heart rates. Teamwork drills help members tone up while cultivating camaraderie, which could lead to a partnership inspiring future buddy-cop-movie sensations.
Even if their clients never intend to step into the ring, the certified trainers at Mittwork Fitness LLC train them with some of the same techniques as prizefighters. Through a noncontact quartet of boxing, kickboxing, MMA, and fitness classes, the coaches foster svelte frames and stronger limbs with combinations of mitt work, heavy-bag workouts, and boot-camp-style exercise. Meanwhile, students gain confidence and soak up the fundamentals of martial-arts techniques without ever having to spar with other students or engage in competition.
At Foundational Health and Fitness, a welcoming, all-woman faculty helps students achieve their fitness and health goals with a well-rounded program of group workouts and nutrition management. Certified holistic-nutrition consultant Wendy Dransfeld divulges tips to help clients stay on track, while Zumba, Pilates, and boot-camp sessions turn midsections and legs into sleek landscapes of muscle. In addition to releasing pent-up sweat, clients can tan in the studio's Sundash Level 3 beds, which impart golden glows without the discomfort of swallowing a handful of pennies.
Under the constant threat of invasion, the soldiers of Thailand (then known as Siam) developed a style of combat based on swordplay but practiced with empty hands. The fighting art grew into a spectator sport for royalty, and lives on to this day in the form of muay thai. At Newburgh Muay Thai, instructors preserve the art, culture, and context of Thai fighting, embracing Khanomtom muay thai—the sport’s most traditional form. Instructors travel each year to Thailand to train for a month, sparring with and learning from current and former champions before bringing their knowledge and skills back to students in New York. The gym also offers training in western-style boxing as well as cardio kickboxing.
