Colossal train engines once pulled hefty freight along the O&W Railway's main line. Today, where the rails lines formerly cut through glistening tree canopies, a 2-mile unpaved trail splices through six rural hamlets, just 90 miles from New York City. It's along this rails-to-trails path that Woodridge Segway Tours whisks its adventurers through beautiful mountain views, clean country air, and the sounds of fresh water trickling. With safety helmets securely atop their heads, tour takers steer the two-wheeled segway transporters with intuitive gestures: leaning forward to go ahead, leaning backward to reverse, and pulling on their ears to make the segways sing.

Kennedy International Airport (JFK) or Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and touch down in Nairobi, where Odyssey Safaris staff await to shuttle guests to the Nairobi Safari Park Hotel, tucked amid 50 acres of manicured gardens. Wayfarers can explore the Kenyan capital for the day or rest up on the hotel's antique four-poster beds. The next morning, the group journeys to the northern plains of Samburu National Reserve for two days in pursuit of elephants, beisa oryx, zebras, and giraffes, grazing against a stunning backdrop of Mount Kenya. After the sun dips below the Rift Valley horizon, tuckered travelers doze off within their luxe tents at Ashnil Samburu camp as the calls of distant animals carry through the night. The following day and a half is spent trekking through Lake Nakuru National Park, with a trip to the shores of the eponymous watering hole, aflutter with millions of pink flamingos on vacation from America's lawns and the occasional rhino trotting along the shore. The cozy, chalet-style rooms at the Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge ensure a good night's sleep, and sunrise on the private patios overlooking Lake Nakuru ushers in an adventure-filled day. The expedition culminates at the Masai Mara National Reserve, one of Kenya's premiere wildlife sanctuaries, punctuated by undulating hills and an abundance of fauna, including more than 53 bird-of-prey species. Elephants lumber about as gazelles dart spritely through the grasslands. Safari-goers may glimpse lions, leopards, and cheetahs stalking prey, or snap photos of hippos sparring in the Mara River. Come nightfall, the well-appointed tents at the Ashnil Mara camp beckon.

More than thirty years ago, Patricia and Jack Baldwin plunged the stakes of their first vineyard into the fertile soil of their newly purchased parcel of land. By 1985, the couple was hard at work building the foundation for what was becoming a successful microwinery and began to create a many different varietals, from their velvety chardonnay to their tart black-raspberry wine. Today, the vineyard produces more than 15 wines, including its beloved strawberry wine, which has won Best Fruit Wine at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition several times. Baldwin Vineyards also sponsors a Strawberry, Chocolate & Wine Festival, which showcases the pairing of its wines with desserts during tastings.

Visitors to Westfall Winery descend into the building's secret barrel room to taste fruit-packed potables from Westfall's extensive wine list, all crafted with Old World wine-making techniques amid the picturesque greenery of Sussex County. Inside French oak barrels, fermented grapes age into velvety cabernet sauvignon, local blueberries age into slightly tart blueberry wine, and young castaways age into colorful, barrel-dwelling philosophers. Sated oenophiles can step outside to Westfall Winery’s picnic area to relish a grilled hot dog and homemade chili, and tour the winery’s sparkling pond and white picket fences. At the end of the event, guests can take home a bottle or a case ($12.50+), then use the empty bottles to build a glass-bottomed lifeboat.
