AliaLani Day Spa owner and massage therapist Emily Murphy knows the benefits of massage go far beyond simple relaxation. Since she specializes in pain reduction through trigger-point therapy—used in modalities like traditional Lomi Lomi and sports therapy—Emily's clients can enjoy increased range of motion, reduced tension, and even a stimulated immune system. An aesthetician is also on-site to perform restorative facials.

The rippling waters of Oahu offer relaxing backdrop for the expert bodywork of licensed massage therapist Kimberly Cazimero. In the comfort of her My Island Spa, she can ease chronic tension with focused deep-tissue pressure, or melt tension with lighter Swedish strokes. Guests may also request a signature sports massage, which improves range of motion in struggling limbs and vocal range in struggling tenors.

The JK7-OlaLoa, The Spa Retreat for the 7 Senses is the brainchild of biochemist Dr. Jurgen Klein—founder of Jurlique skin products—and his wife Karin. Their combination of science and spa experience earned them a Best Green Spa nomination from Luxist. The Synergized spa package begins with 45 minutes in the 120-degree heat of the aromatherapy steam room, followed by flash immersion in the cold plunge pool, designed to loosen muscles and detoxify the body. Guests then make their way into the custom-built JK7-Spa Sensator, where they float on their backs in warm saltwater for 45 minutes as the room's lighting shifts colors in concert with stress-melting music, anxiety-evaporating fragrances, and whale songs emitted by a giant conch shell. Once mental tensions have drained away, JK7's bodyworkers labor on corporal tautness in a 75-minute customized massage, culled from techniques such as Swedish, lymphatic drainage, hot stone, and deep tissue. The day culminates with guests taking in the ocean view of the Oahu coast while munching on assorted pupu dishes, which may include veggie sticks with freshly made dip or homemade bruschetta.

There are many reasons a person might need physical therapy. From postinjury rehab and stroke recovery to arthritis management and sports-performance enhancement, the facilities at PT Hawaii are well equipped to handle a wide range of neuromusculoskeletal maladies. Within the comfort of a private treatment room, massage therapists knead aching muscles and improve range of motion in stiff joints. The reduced gravitational force and bumped-up buoyancy of the 100,000-gallon saltwater AquaCare pool help people improve their Marco Polo technique while protecting injured parts from further damage.

JoDana Newman was working as a compounding and nuclear pharmacy technician on the East Coast when she was first introduced to colon hydrotherapy. At the time, she was suffering from an autoimmune skin condition and couldn't find relief anywhere. But after six months of colonics, her skin condition disappeared and her energy levels increased. JoDana became such a big believer in colonics' healing properties that she signed up for an intensive colon-hydrotherapy certification course so that she could begin helping others fight their health woes. That eventually led JoDana to Hawaii, where she opened her own colon-hydrotherapy and detoxification center, M.O. Wellness Center, in January 2011. There, she flushes built-up toxins from colons, cleanses gallbladders and livers, and coaches clients through 10-week weight-loss programs that involve colon hydrotherapy, supplements, and at least 147 words of encouragement.

For licensed massage therapist Michele Czara, holistic wellness is a family business. Her father was a chiropractor, and her daughter has followed in her footsteps with a career in massage. For more than two decades, Michele has operated out of North Shore Sports Therapy— where she slackens the shoulders of national and international sports teams, NFL Pro Bowl athletes, and world surfing champions. Now, guests and island mainstays can call on Michele for a therapeutic session with flowing deep-tissue bodywork or the firm acupressure of lomilomi techniques.
