Serving direct-trade beans from Seattle's Kuma Coffee microroasters, Starling fuels bustling bodies with the energy needed to tackle mornings and beyond. Traditional brewed coffee ($1.25–$2.00) awakens senses with a no-frills wallop, and the rich whip of a café mocha melds milk, espresso, and actual whips ($2.85–$3.60). Add yummy flavor shots ($0.50 each) such as toasted marshmallow, caramel, and blueberry to brews, or summon the spritely mouth-tickle of an italian soda ($2.65–$3.75). Starling Coffee also boasts an array of teas ($1.50–$2.25) and smoothies ($3.75–$4.30) that coat throat canals with viscous fruit serums. When inner rumbles beckon, pair drinks with breakfast sandwiches ($1.95–$3.95), grilled turkey sandwiches ($4), or bagels ($2.95) smothered in ham, cheese, and East Coast regrets.
If the tongue-in-cheek staff bios, the colorful mission statement, or the laugh-filled video of its Bellevue store is any indication, Seattle Coffee Gear is run by happy folks. And why wouldn't it be? With two retail locations and a wealth of bright, accessibly written online resources, the company clearly loves coffee and has plenty of energy with which to share that passion. Should they choose, shoppers visiting the stores encounter interactive experiences. They can test over 80 espresso and coffee machine models, learn how to whip up the perfect latte, or put a leash around whatever floating cloud of frothed milk that they want to take home. The stores' new and refurbished gear ranges from simple electric kettles to restaurant-grade, multi-cup espresso machines. An on-staff team of technicians also maintains and repairs the machines that java fans bring in.

In your own words, how would you describe your menu?
Our menu has a large variety of food and drink items, but is not overwhelming.
What made you want to work with food? When did you first develop that passion?
We started our business to give our neighbors a better option for their morning coffee. Previously, the only options available were coffee from global corporations or from small sheds without plumbing that somehow pass health codes. We pride our self on having one of the cleanest, best equipped espresso businesses around.
Owner and baker Chandell Witham knows real passion for baked goods. To put herself through culinary school, the single mother of three had to work long hours as a bartender in a disappointingly donut-free environment. Her perseverance paid off and today Chandell spends plenty of time with her children and her brainchild, Fritters N Jitters, where she mans the kitchens and whips up tasty donuts. Every morning, she bakes off fresh batches of comforting plain donuts. As patrons order, the innovative baker then outfits each ringed pastry with customizable frostings and toppings to fashion quirky confections her guests can marvel at alongside a steaming cup of coffee or fresh-squeezed donut juice. Frosting choices include classic flavors and wild variations such as mint or crunch peanut butter, and can be accented with a choice of sprinkles, candy pieces, or salty portions of pretzels or crispy bacon.
There's something for everyone at The Den Coffee House & Cafe, from the drip coffee connoisseur to the gluten-free pastry lover. Hot and cold drinks are prepared with care by the Caffe D'Arte-certified baristas, and guests can pick up whole-bean coffees or loose-leaf teas for home brewing and drinking. Pastries and other sweets are baked fresh daily, including banana bread, gluten-free brownies, and signature cookies. The Coffee House also hosts several different types of alternative milks including coconut and almond. Live music on the weekends provides a lively atmosphere without the help of caffeine or by switching out sugar for smelling salt.
