WineStyles' sommeliers work hard to find the most worthwhile wines on earth. After scouring vineyards to root out hard-to-find bottles, they arrange them on easy-to-navigate shelves grouped by flavor characteristics rather than varietal. Their “crisp” section favors tart, acidic flavor profiles often found in apple orchards, while their “mellow” section abounds with smooth, velvety wines ideal for pairing with pork, lamb, or an entire gallon of ice cream. The shop also stocks craft beer from brewers such as Bell's and Great Divide, looseleaf Rishi teas, and chocolate truffles infused with sea-salt-caramel or champagne.
The cast of Discovery Channel’s “Moonshiners” are a professionally reclusive bunch, brewing generations-old recipes in camouflaged stills beside their homes. Still, many beyond the hidden hills of Appalachia celebrate their traditions, and their product. The Moonshiner Festival gathers together some of the cast to meet their fans for three days of live music, barbecuing, camping, and, of course, drinking moonshine. Cast members in attendance include Mark Rogers and Jeff Waldroup, Lynn Waldroup and Lance Waldroup, and Mike Lewis and Bobby Tweedy. They dole out autographs and sit down to meals with the festival attendees, possibly even joining in to cut a rug to the musical stylings of the Smoking Guns or Hooch Holler.
Dan Vallish has been homebrewing beer as a hobby for more than 20 years. During that time, he often envisioned the perfect place to shop for his supplies. It would have all the specialty grains one could want, an onsite milling facility, and fresh yeast and hops. Ultimately, he made that vision a reality, founding Barley & Vine to be a one-stop shop for beer lovers and beer brewers, complete with a 27-tap growler bar with 26 craft beers and a cider on tap at all times.
Of course, Dan offers more than just disparate beer-brewing supplies. He teaches classes on the subject, or provides cloning kits for beginners, which contain all the ingredients to mimic Irish stouts or American pale ales. He also provides winemaking kits, which produce 6 gallons of fermented libations at a time. He even offers instructions and supplies to make cheese, so that his customers can pair their homemade beverages with the perfect snack.
