One of nine stylists at Hair in the City, Marianne Ostvig helps to create the 'home-away-from-home' experience on which the salon prides itself. As the staff nurtures locks with products from Redken and Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS, guests sip on complimentary coffee or soft drinks and connect to free wireless internet.
Inside a tiled sanctuary, puffs of perfumed steam swim through the air, hovering just above the surface of a Japanese soaking tub. This is no ordinary bathtub. It’s the site of Fusion LifeSpa’s curative bath, a treatment that helps clients unwind in tinctures of hot mustard, spicy ginger, or lavender. Inspired by holistic Asian medicine and therapeutic European techniques, services such as curative baths embody Fusion LifeSpa’s eclectic influences.
In the front waiting area, staff members welcome clients with warm cups of organic green tea, a fitting complement to the spa’s feng shui decor. Inside the treatment rooms, European spa treatments—such as massages and facials—contrast Asian-inspired services, including the jasmine facial mask, which makes use of the spa's proprietary skincare line. Other services, such as a footbath inspired by a Moroccan hammam, cleanse the body with natural assistance from organic coffee, tangerines, and figs. And for holistic care, the spa’s acupuncture services can realign energy lines faster than an electrician trained in heart surgery.
When Lori Scharmann founded Hair Proz Salon in 1991, she didn't expect it to become the institution it is today. More than 20 years and a new partner later, the salon's staff comprises many of the original stylists present at its opening, and they draw on those decades of experience when performing each of the salon's varied services. They revamp both men and women's looks with a lineup ranging from facials and manicures to haircuts and full-coloring treatments. To keep their transformation skills current, all stylists undergo continuing education classes and sit down for regular interviews with the most innovative 'dos. They carry products from brands such as Skinceuticals, Moroccanoil, and OPI to help clients maintain their new looks outside the salon.
At Metropolis Salon and Spa, the beauty experts tap into their extensive training to beautify guests with hair, makeup, and nail services. Owner Mark Melter, 1 of only 10 board-certified master colorists in Minnesota, has spent 27 years of his life doing nothing to hair apart from coloring it—not cutting it, not putting it in an updo, and not even sculpting it into the shape of famous statues. This specialization ensures that he can create the perfect shade for full colors or highlights.
Most of the stylists who work alongside Mark also have extensive industry experience; they have worked as TV hair stylists and abroad, and many have worked with hair for more than 20 years. At the salon, they create stylish cuts, blow out locks, and craft updos for special occasions.
The salon’s resident makeup artist, Marni Force, can also make clients pretty for special events using Julie Martin makeup or can teach clients how to apply their own makeup with the 10 Steps to Your Beautiful Face program.
Inside this warm, family-friendly salon, nine stylists are ready and waiting to snip, style, and color clients’ hair with great expertise. Complimentary drinks and WiFi help create a comfortable atmosphere that makes customers feel at home, while semi-private styling stations treat them to one-on-one attention from their stylist or a peaceful spot for practicing chair yoga. Hair in the City also has a nail technician that can add pops of color to patrons, coating their nails with vibrant hues and long-lasting shellac polish.
