Inside CrossFit Laguna Niguel, there's cheering, clapping, and yelling. There's also grunting, sweating, and the clamor of weights as they hit the floor. It's all part of an environment that sets exercisers up to succeed—as long as they're willing to charge into every session full-bore. Here, Workouts of the Day challenge muscles with CrossFit's always varied, always intense lineup of movements. Some of those movements are based in gymnastics, some in weightlifting. No matter the day's game plan, the facility's coaches remain nearby to infuse workouts with extra doses of motivation and direction.
On the heels of 20 years of experience, the instructors of USSD Martial Arts of San Clemente guide a wide variety of programs to students ranging from three-years-old to adult-age. The Kempto Karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs focus on subjects such as self defense, anti abduction, stranger danger and bully prevention.
Weights line the walls, heavy bags swing from the ceiling, and blue plyometric boxes dot a padded floor. These are just some of the many and varied pieces of equipment put to use at CrossFit San Clemente. Trainers employ these tools to teach a system that can be scaled to all fitness levels. Via everyday motions such as pushing, pulling, and lifting, they ready class attendees for all sorts of physical activities, from playing sports to thumb wrestling a grizzly bear. Workouts are altered each day to ward off boredom and keep everyone on track to meet their goals. To ease the uninitiated into the CrossFit method, trainers offer a less intense On Ramp class to familiarize participants with the fundamentals.
The trainers at CrossFit Vibe believe an unintimidating environment paired with encouragement and motivation is the key to optimal fitness. Their CrossFit Fundamentals classes teach students the discipline's nine basic movements, which are presented during scalable workouts that fit every fitness level. Armed with their newfound knowledge, students often transition into the more intense group classes. There, trainers test fitness limits with sessions that blend weight-based strength work with mono-structural movements such as running and rowing. These high-intensity exercises take the form of CrossFit's signature Workout of the Day, whose ever-changing regimen might include burpees, box jumps, and pull-ups on one day and back extensions, sit-ups, and 800m runs on another. In addition to keeping minds engaged and out of ruts, this variety also promotes the muscle confusion necessary to maximize physical results.
CrossFit Onslaught is led by coach Jason Davis, who uses CrossFit’s principles of functional movement to help his clients push past mental barriers and achieve higher levels of physical performance. Rather than pack his facility with treadmills and circuit-training equipment, his green- and white-walled exercise space opens to the outside and is unencumbered by anything other than practitioners using free weights to complete the Workout of the Day. The staff of certified trainers also doles out nutritional advice and holds classes twice a day, six days a week.
LA Boxing offers fitness classes in boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts. The proprietary style of the LA Boxing workout is a mixture of genuine fight training, engaging fitness, and stronger-than-earth gravity. Quasi-boxers and martial artists may burn from 800 to more than 1,000 calories during these total-body routines, which combine external inspiration with jukes, jabs, and kicks. Both men and women are welcome in the ring, where they'll learn new techniques and methods to blissfully break into a sweat in an energetic group setting. Gloves are provided during the one-month trial membership, as are a set of reusable pro-quality hand wraps and complimentary motivational mumbling from Burgess Meredith (all three subject to availability).
