The state-of-the-art equipment, convenient amenities, and variety of exercise classes at Courthouse Racquet & Fitness's six locations earned the club several of Jackson Free Press's Urban Living awards in 2011 and 2012, including Best Fitness Center/Gym and Best Yoga Instructor. Visit the flagship Lakeland location to swim in a pool of professional athletic proportions. Women can take advantage of the Downtown site's ladies-only cardio area. Three locations offer childcare, and the Byram facility has launched an afterschool program, where kids can do arts and crafts and engage in healthy physical activities in an environment devoid of teddy-bear drill instructors.

Wedgewood Golfers' Club and North Creek Golf Course integrate the scenic landscapes of northern Mississippi into their par 72 layouts, taking golfers across rolling hills and rippling waterways.

The North Creek course's bermuda-grass fairways weave along the edges of Horn Lake Creek with a relatively open layout and mounded terrain that channels the links-style charm of golf's Scotch-Irish forebears. Slightly easier than its counterpart, North Creek caters to clubbers of all stripes with four tee options and optional bumper greens.

North Creek Golf Course at a Glance:

  • 18-hole, par 72 course
  • Length of 6,433 yards from the farthest tees
  • Course rating of 71.2 from the farthest tees
  • Slope rating of 125 from the farthest tees
  • Four tee options

Cleaved through a combination of dense tree lines and intervening ponds, The Wedgewood course's bermuda-grass fairways sprawl across 6,863 yards of arduous terrain. With trees hugging most holes, and water hazards kissed against the underside of two doglegged fairways, the course frequently forces players into tough course-management decisions, such as when to smash a driver, when to play lay-up with a three-wood, and how to coerce fellow golfers into giving you unlimited mulligans. Though challenging from the back tees, the course's inventive layout is forgiving enough for players of all abilities.

Wedgewood Golfers' Club at a Glance:

  • 18-hole, par 72 course
  • Length of 6,863 yards from the farthest tees
  • Course rating of 72.8 from the farthest tees
  • Slope rating of 127 from the farthest tees
  • Four tee options

James Rothery served as a military policeman for 10 years, serving two tours of duty in Iraq and training other military personnel in hand-to-hand combat. It was telling, then, that after investigating many styles of martial arts, he chose to stick with wu zu quan kung fu. The name of his chosen art translates as "Five Ancestor Fist," describing its history as a combination of styles. James breaks those styles into digestible chunks for his students, arming them slowly with more advanced skills or simply focusing on fitness and self-defense for those interested in purely practical applications.

Q&A with Christopher Misun, Marketing Director

Apart from your business's main attraction, do you offer any "hidden" services or activities that visitors are always delighted to learn about?

We offer the only outdoor laser-tag experience in Mississippi. The course is tucked away in a small wooded space near our go-kart area and immerses the customers in a great woodland adventure game. Along with that course, players can also participate in Airsoft matches.

What is the one feature of your business that you're most proud of?

Our birthday parties give groups more options than any other facility in a 50-mile radius. Between mini golf, go-karts, and outdoor laser tag, we have tons of options for kids to participate in on top of using the game money they receive to play in the arcade. We have private rooms for cake and pizza, and our staff is very helpful in providing the parents with whatever they need to help make it a special day for the birthday boy or girl.

Have you ever been a patron of your own business? If so, what was the most enjoyable part?

I have really enjoyed the variety that we provide. No one else can offer as many options for games and activities as we can. The Park at North Hills is a one-stop shop for the entire family because we offer so much that appeals to each age group.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

For being a relatively small area, we have packed as much as possible into that space. We have countless outdoor activities including mini-golf, batting cages for baseball and softball, go-karts, outdoor laser tag and Airsoft. Inside, we feature party rooms, arcade games, redemption games, and pool tables. Our facility offers a lot of bang for the space.

Hale Irwin recognizes that most golf courses have only one signature hole. But you don?t win the U.S. Open three times and rack up 87 professional victories in a storied PGA career by doing what everybody else does. So when Mr. Irwin unveiled his design for The Links at Cottonwoods in March of 1998, he included two signature holes: the 13th, a par 5 extending to a whopping 600 yards, and the 16th, a par 3 with a nerve-racking island green. In 2012, readers of Golf Digest presented Mr. Irwin with a 4.5-star rating in the magazine?s ?Best Places to Play? section for his audacious design and willingness to flout convention.

His distinctive pair of holes highlights a pristine, 18-hole stretch of Scottish-style links, complete with wide fairways pestered by strong seasonal winds but free of wandering sheep that chew on argyle socks. As players chase dimpled orbs across the Meyer Zoysia fairways and tap them over the Champion Bermuda greens, they?ll encounter water-bordering play on more than half of the holes.

Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 72 course * Total length of 6,989 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 72.3 from the back tees * Course slope of 119 from the back tees * Five sets of tees per hole
