Designed by celebrated architect Frank Gehry, the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art exalts the work of George E. Ohr, a ceramic artist and moustache enthusiast known as the "Mad Potter of Biloxi." After it was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina, the campus reopened in 2010 amidst a grove of ancient live-oak trees, featuring a series of six aesthetically impressive pavilions that include a welcome center, a gallery of African-American art, and an interpretive center inside a reconstruction of the house of emancipated craftsman Pleasant Reed. Current exhibitions include collections from some of the art world's biggest names, including Andy Warhol and ceramic sculptor Jun Kaneko, as well as selections from Ohr's Gulf Coast collection, which inspired the American Modernist movement and several MLB baseball teams to wear ceramic pots instead of baseball hats.
There are no roads in the sky—just clouds and the floating mansions of America's billionaires. Similarly, Downtown Aviation's flying lessons don't follow one set pathway to pilot certification. Using FAA-approved materials, the school's certified flight instructors can teach a fast-paced course or follow a more casual lesson plan. But the endpoint remains the same: a student, private, or sport certificate.
One of the most exciting moments during training occurs approximately 20–25 hours into instruction, when students take the controls for their first solo flight. As they soar over Memphis or Olive Branch, taking in bird's eye views through the cockpit windshield, some may feel inspired to pursue flying as a career. Luckily, they won't have to look for a new school. Downtown Aviation's faculty trains pilots for their commercial certificates and airline transport pilot licenses. The staff can also maintain pilots' aircrafts at their Cessna-certified service center.
The two-hour cruise is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m., depart at 7 p.m., and return at 9 p.m., affording passengers plenty of time to successfully saturate taste buds, ear buds, and dance buds. As you set off into the sunset backdrop on the Mississippi River, the wafting aromas of a feast prepared onboard will tempt a range of palates. Select from salads, hot entrees, carving stations, and sides; choices include prime rib, roasted turkey, red beans and rice, steamed seasonal vegetables, and seasoned potatoes. Complimentary coffee, soft drinks, and tea abound, and tipplers can head to the cash bar for a classic cocktail. Panoramic windows, two enclosed decks, and two outdoor decks showcase the historic waterfront unfolding in front of you as live music invites dance muscles to twitch rhythmically under the stars.
