Originally an interior designer and color coordinator, Nisha realized she was meant to design hair when her cousin's makeup artist fell ill the day of her wedding and Nisha stepped in to save the day. She already had the fundamentals??her interior design experience taught her to listen to the client, visualize the whole picture, and customize. It's now 20 years since that wedding and Nisha's still at it at Nisha's Salon. She's hand picked a team of aestheticians and stylists, and together they design and color hair in a way that embellishes each client's individual features such as the shape of their face and the color of their eyes. They also offer facials, waxing, and makeup.
With more than 25 years of styling experience, Ms. Shalini—a certified cosmetologist and skincare specialist who has studied beauty in the United States and India—envisioned a tranquil beauty oasis when she founded Instyle Beauty Salon. Today, along with Ms. Tamina, a certified cosmetologist, hairstyling specialist, and a graduate of New York’s Aveda Institute, Ms. Shalini pampers customers with spa and beauty services in a hair salon and three private treatment rooms.
In the Buddha room, tranquil statues oversee massages and facials under the soft light of candles and paper lamps. In the Village room, hanging lanterns illuminate rustic art as customers recline for facial treatments. Waxing and cleaning treatments populate the Garden room, which cheers clients with fresh flowers that commiserate amicably with freshly plucked hairs.
What started as a beauty shop operating out of Aisha Khalid's home has now, 20 years later, blossomed into 10 full-service, women-only salons. The aestheticians at Aisha's Salon & Spa were some of the first to bring threading to the faces of Houston ladies, whisking away unruly brows, chin fuzz, and emperor-tamarin mustaches with a thin cotton filament. For body depilation, they turn to traditional waxing, and body polishes and facials leave skin rejuvenated and smooth. Stylists trim, straighten, and color tresses, and makeup artists apply finishing touches with traditional or airbrush products.
The technicians at Envogue Spa & Salon accentuate epidermises with traditional salon and spa services as well as medical-grade skincare. They dote on prized locks with haircuts, styling, and highlights, and banish unwanted fuzz via threading and waxing services using natural azulene cream wax. Their facials heal and brighten complexions to better attract the attention of jumbotron operators. For more stubborn imperfections, clinical skin treatments promise a respite from warts and skin tags using radioactive therapy and cryotherapy.
For the past 15 years, the beauty experts at Sheila's Hair Design have enhanced bodies with cuts and colors, the ancient art of threading, and henna tattoos that are ideal for weddings or turning a row of freckles into Pac-Man fodder. A boutique area showcases clothing and jewelry from Pakistan and India, including traditional pieces from Rajasthan.
Black, leather seating, elegantly spare walls, and copious light reflecting off the hardwood floors sets the tranquil setting of Singhaar, a salon, spa, and Indian apparel boutique. After aestheticians refresh complexions with facials inside private treatment rooms, and stylists sculpt and color coifs, guests can top off new looks by harvesting pieces from the boutique's multicolored racks. Vivid fuschias, greens, and yellows swim across dresses and tunics in the form of paisley, beaded embellishments, and even zebra print?though no zebras or paisley monsters were harmed in the clothes' creation.
